Translation Report On "Gu Piao Fen Xi Xue" From The Perspective Of The Skopos Theory

The development of a country cannot be separated from all kinds of markets,especially the capital market.In addition,translators pay more and more attention to the requirements on how to finish high-quality translation in a limited time.Machine Translation and Post-Editing(shortened as MT + PE)is a feasible solution to improve efficiency.It is of great practical significance to study whether and when MT + PE is applicable.In the company where the author worked as an intern,she was required to finish translating “Gu Piao Fen Xi Xue” within one month.Therefore,the author chose Baidu Translate as an assistant,combining the translation theory with translation skills,and editing the translated text by MT,which can improve the accuracy of the translation.The translation report selects the whole book “Gu Piao Fen Xi Xue” with a total of190,000 words as the practice material and extracts 138 complex sentences.Guided by the Skopos Theory,the thesis deals with the differences between machine translation and human translation.Through the analysis of specific examples,it is concluded that the post-editing of complex sentences mainly requires the following five translation techniques: amplification,adverse translation,splitting,recombination,and conversion.1)In Chinese sentences,the subject or object is often omitted.When machine translation fails to realize it,amplification will be adopted.2)The focus of Chinese sentences is usually placed at the back.When the machine adopts word for word translation,the adverse translation will be adopted.3)Long Chinese sentences are wordy.When machine translation can’t provide proper sentence segmentation,splitting will be adopted.4)The Chinese structure is loose.When machine translation is unable to combine clauses according to logical relations,recombination will be adopted.5)Chinese and English are different in their usage of words and voices.When machine translation fails to make a flexible conversion,the conversion will be adopted.Starting from Vermeer’s Skopos Theory,the report aims to analyze the differences between machine translation and human translation in terms of the complex sentences from “Gu Piao Fen Xi Xue”,summarizes the effective post-editing skills and strives to make the translation more in line with the English expression habits.The detailed case analysis is hoped to provide a reference for the translators who study a similar topic in the future.
