Machine Translation And Post-Editing

Thanks to the development of science and technology,particularly to the booming of information industry,machine translation has become more and more widely used,which can not only simplify the translating process,but also improve the translating efficiency.Meanwhile,due to the limitations of the machine translation,we regrettably find it a common phenomenon that there is an imbalance between the translating efficiency and its quality even when it gets more and more generally applied to translating process.Therefore,it seems quite necessary to adopt the manual work of post-editing to ensure the translating quality along with the application of machine translation.Based on what mentioned above,Economic Report of the President 2021 was selected as the translating practice material for the following reasons.With regarding to the report,which was released by the White House in mid-February 2021 and prepared by the Council of Economic Advisers.Its original purpose was to provide the American public and the economic policy community with a detailed overview of the performance of the US economy in the past year.The translation of this text is conducive to studying the US economic development model,learning the experience of US economic development,and is more conducive to China’s "know the enemy and know yourself,and you can fight a hundred battles with no danger of defeat" in the international wave,so the translation of this text has certain theoretical and practical significance.In addition,since it was an information text about economics,the translating would be guided by Skopos theory of translation,and the translating mode would be machine translation + post-editing so as to further explore the combination of machine translation and post-editing in a context.Due to the obvious machine turnover errors in the translating of the Report,the author would analyze the specific cases under the guidance of Skopos theory,of course,the manual work of post-editing would also be done to modify the original machine translation,thereafter,some corresponding editing strategies would be provided.And such strategies would be given from three perspectives,lexically,syntactically,and semantically.As for the lexical aspect,the modification was carried out by searching for correct terms,improving word fluency,removing multi-translated expressions and correcting collocation errors.In terms of the syntactic aspect,the sentence structure,paraphrasing,and logical connection were all adjusted.Regarding the semantic level,the translation was therefore modified by integrating its background knowledge with its context.To summarize,with the guidance of Skopos theory,the translating was carried out with the help of machine translation,by comparing two versions of its translation,it was found that the mode of machine translation plus manual work of post-editing was obviously better than the mere job of machine translation.To some extent,this report could help translators better understand the advantages of machine translation and the manual work of human translation.It is hoped that we could better combine the translation technology and the manual work of post-editing work together and further improve our translating.
