A Reflection Report On Dealing With Run-on Sentences In Chinese-english Consecutive Interpreting From Interpretive Theory Perspective

In recent years,with the deepening of China’s cultural exchanges with other countries,Chinese-English consecutive interpreting plays an increasingly important role in the process of Chinese culture going abroad.The interpreters often need to deal with the run-on sentences which fully embody the characteristics of Chinese language during their interpreting work.Due to the complexity and variety of its sentence pattern,the run-on sentences have made themselves the key and difficult points in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting,drawing wide attention from interpreters and interpreting researchers.This paper is a reflective report on the practice of simulated Chinese-English consecutive interpreting,with the speech Our Time,Our Fighting given by Jin Yinan at National Defence University PLA China as its corpus.The interpreting practice shows that its largest challenge lies in the interpreting of Chinese run-on sentences featuring lack of explicit connection,information repetition and semantic absence,which lead to improper interpreting.Thus,based on the perspective of interpretive theory,the improper interpreting mentioned above are deeply discussed and then better ways are proposed in this paper.Analysis shows that adding connectives and word order adjustment plus adding connectives can effectively solve the first problem.Omission,deconstruction-reorganization and semantic transformation are the best ways to deal with the second.Adding semantic components and paraphrase can handle the last one.This reflective paper hopes to provide reference for the Chinese-English consecutive interpreting of run-on sentences in the future.
