A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of IEEE Guide For Protection Relay Application To Distribution Lines

With the sustainable economic growth in China,the power industry has developed rapidly.Driven by this trend,exchanges and cooperation between China and foreign countries have become increasingly frequent,which has increased growing demand for translations about power industry.Under such circumstance,the author has participated in a translation project of IEEE Guide for Protective Relays Application to Distribution Lines.On the basis of this translation project,the supporting materials of this report are chosen from her translation practice.This report chiefly includes four chapters,covering project description,project preparation,solutions to difficulties encountered in the translation,reflections,as well as suggestions.It mainly focuses on exploring appropriate translation strategies and techniques for difficulties encountered in translation.In the process of translation,the author has encountered such difficulties as nominalized structure,prepositional phrases,as well as long and complicated sentences.Under the guidance of Translation Shifts Theory proposed by Catford,a famous English linguist and translation theorist,the author has adopted corresponding translation techniques.To be specific,literal translation and conversion could be used in the translation of nominalized structure.When translating prepositional phrases,the author has transformed them into Chinese adverbials,verb-object structures and adjectives.In terms of long and complicated sentences,the author has chosen such translation techniques as linear translation,division and adjustment.Based on the analysis and summary of her translation practice,the author sincerely hopes that this report could provide some practical references for translators and learners who are engaged in translating similar materials and are interested in the scientific and technological translation.
