The thesis is a translation report and the source text is selected from the first two chapters of the book Breathless-Why Air pollution Matters and How It Affects You,which talks about the negative effects of air pollution, pollution conditions and strategies for combating it around the world. The chosen material for this translation practice is a popular scientific text that combines scientificity, literariness and enjoyment.According to the above features and to better convey the intended purpose of the text and achieve its educational function, the translator guided by the Translation Shifts Theory proposed by Catford uses translation techniques like lexis shifts, grammar shifts, structural shifts, class shifts and unit shifts and takes into account the differences between Chinese and English in developing the translation practice. The goal is to make the translated text better understood by readers, enabling them to grasp the true meaning of the source text. The translator completed a translation practice of approximately 15,000 words. The report is divided into five parts: Task Introduction,Process Description,Theoretical Foundation,Case analysis and Conclusion.Through this translation practice, the translator gains a further understanding of the features of popular science text, the knowledge of air pollution, and the differences between Chinese and English, and improves her understanding of Translation Shift Theory. The translator has also accumulated precious translation experience. The translator hopes that this translation practice report could provide some reference for the control of air pollution.
