An Interpreting Report Of The Victoria-Jiangsu Business Placement(VJBP) Program

In order to enhance China-Australia trade and strengthen bilateral economic cooperation,the sixth Victoria Jiangsu Business Placement(VJBP)Program was held from May 11 to 18,2019 in Jiangsu Province,China.During the project,the reporter worked as an interpreter for Australian Adjuvants Pty Ltd.,mainly providing escort interpreting services for Chris Barry,director of the foreign company,helping him understand the market of Chinese agricultural adjuvants,and seeking domestic strategic partnerships for his company.During this time as an interpreter,the reporter mainly encountered problems such as the speaker’s strong accent,reporter’s lack of terminology,and the speaker’s intensive information.After the project,the reporter gave herself days for reflection,drawing upon previous research achievements and the suggestions of outstanding interpreters in the field,to propose the following solutions to the above problems: in terms of language ability,be extensively exposed to different accents,and strengthen the training of listening and discrimination of Australian accents;in regard to professional terminology interpreting,increase the accumulation of professional knowledge and improve cognitive complement;with respect to the speaker’s information-intensive aspect,make information selection effective,make preparations for translation,and conduct shelling training.The reporter conducted an analysis based on a large amount of real corpora in the interpretation project.The paper will provide assistance for interpreters in adjuvants field;it will also enrich the database in this field which attracts growing attention in recent years.
