This paper, based on Robert’s(2014)revision procedure theory,Mossop’s(2014)revision parameter theory and Newmark’s(2001)text typology theory, discusses the revision procedure and revision methods with the case study of the revision of the translation of An Economy of Intermediate Form(2002).Robert(2014)has done a great many empirical studies on revision procedure by interview, experiment, and proposed applicable situations for monolingual revision and bilingual revision which are of guiding importance to revision practice.Brian Mossop(2014),a Canadian translator, proposed 12 revision parameters:accuracy,completeness,logic,facts,smoothness,tailoring,sub-language,idiom,mechanics,layout,typography and organization and categorized them into four groups:transfer, content, language and style and presentation. His parameter theory gives the most comprehensive and systematic set of criteria which provides important references for translation revision at operational level. While the text typology theory, based on divisions of text functions,is a vital breakthrough and significant complement of the traditional translation’s"equivalence principle".The text typology pays attention to the text functions in the target language which will not only help translators to adopt proper translation methods such as semantic and communicative translation methods according to the function and characteristics of different texts, but also provide the translators with specific revision principles at the macro textual level.Based on the above-mentioned theories on translation revision, this report will revise the translation of chapter one of An Economy of Intermediate Form and reflect on the revision procedure and revision methods based on the revision practice. The first Chapter discusses the task background, significance and structure of the report.Chapter two introduces the revision process and Chapter three introduces the theoretical basis for the report.Chapter four firstly introduces the detailed revision procedure and revision content and then analyzes the translation problems according to revision parameters and finally applies solutions to these problems with the communicative translation method as the main method and semantic translation method as a supplement method. And the final part gives a conclusion of the revision practice and points out the drawbacks of the report and expresses the prospect of the studies. The study shows that after a thorough consideration of the characteristics of the texts and potential translation problems,an effective revision procedure can be established:monolingual revision followed by bilingual revision and finally second monolingual revision. The first monolingual revision deals with mechanic problems in the translation, and then the second bilingual revision deals with the transfer, content and language, and style problems in the translation and finally the last monolingual revision deals with the presentation problems such as layout and typography in the translation.Besides, when dealing with the translation problems,a semantic translation method can be adopted to solve the problems of message incompleteness, introduced factual errors;while a communicative translation method can be adopted to solve the inaccuracy, illogical, unidiomatic problems. Finally,to achieve a translation with higher quality, the reviser should make full use of the search engine, parallel texts and dictionaries to check the information of historical data, accurate and authentic terms and expressions. |
