Chinese outstanding traditional culture works as a crucial gateway to the enhancement of the nation’s cultural soft power.Chinese Operas contains the aesthetic essence of Chinese national literature, music and dance, etc. It is one of the outstanding culture of China, and a significant intangible cultural heritage of the nation.Since 2001 when Kunqu Opera was listed as a World Cultural Heritage, the inheritance and development has achieved delightful success with the help of government policies and decades of preservation, gradually diminishing its trend to extinction.Aside from preserving the inheritors and their cultural space, the Chinese theatre arts community has been seeking for the modernization of Chinese Operas, striving to merge the arts into modern life so as to widen the range of target audience. However, this modernization should not be equivalent to adopting modern topics, nor should it be treated as westernization.Exploring Chinese Operas modernization requires the indepth understanding of the essence of modernization and requires innovation on the basis of"maintaining orthodoxy".The traditional and local aesthetic sense in Chinese theatre arts should remain intact in the process of achieving commercial self-reliance.This thesis takes Guiju Opera as the example for the research. In this paper, the history of Guiju Opera is chronological arranged. In order to investigate the inheritance of the art and the implementation of the policies, the inheritors were interviewed and the local theatre audience were surveyed. The result reveals the ascendant resources added by the policies.Yet,due to the fading cultural space, the inheritance still faces the difficulties, namely art features overwhelmed by western operas, insufficient development of local market, dying out folk troupes and lack of inheritors.Concerning art features overwhelmed by western operas, specific regulation for "maintaining orthodoxy" set by culture-related administrations is required.Current traditional opera production must not focus solely on innovation.During the preservation of intangible cultural heritage, language system in Chinese theatre arts should be regulated and made clear of,commercializing the traditional arts gradually. As for the lack of inheritors, local operas should have the courage to "send talents out and greet them back",facilitating the nation’s systematic education resources to cultivate successors.Under the background of Rural Revitalization strategy, the focus should be on rural opera arts.Grassroots, amateur and folk troupes should hold the preference of resources so as to protect the foundation of local operas in the countryside, thus protect Chinese culture.
