A Report On The C-E Translation Of Heroes In Harm’s Way(Excerpt)under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

This report is a case study of the C-E translation of Chinese youth literature work Heroes in Harm’s Way written by Xu Nuochen.Heroes in Harm’s Way is about the touching stories of medical staff and front-line workers who bravely save lives and maintain the normal operation of people’s lives during COVID-19 epidemic.The language is vivid and the theme is positive and optimistic.This report consists of the following parts:introduction to the translation task,description of the translation process,literature review,case analysis and conclusion.The author first introduces the content and research significance of the source text,and then expounds the translation process,the summary of the difficulties encountered in translation.The main part of the report is a case analysis.Under the guidance of three rules of the Skopos Theory and combined with examples,the author discusses and analyzes the translation methods and techniques adopted from the lexical,syntactic and textual levels.At the lexical level,under the guidance of the principles of Skopos and coherence,the author analyzes the omission of category words,the free translation of culture-loaded expressions and four-character idioms,and the amplification of Chinese introductory words.At the syntactic level,the author mainly introduces the translation skills of Chinese non-subject sentences,imperative sentences and oaths involved in Heroes in Harm’s Way.Finally,at the textual level,the author explains the means of cohesion and coherence used in this translation practice according to the principle of coherence.After the above research,the author of the report finds that under the guidance of Skopos theory,translators can shift their focus from the source text to the purpose of the target text.According to the specific guidance of the three rules of Skopos theory,the translators can flexibly select translation methods and techniques such as literal translation,free translation and amplification to deal with words and sentences in order to ensure the quality of translation.
