At present,with the progress of the world,English has been more and more crucial in daily life.China plays an important role so there will have more and more demand to contact with the world in the future.Therefore,English is especially important for Chinese students.English vocabulary is the basis of English learning and plays an indispensable role in Chinese students' English class from primary school to high school.Throughout learning career of students,primary school is the beginning of English education so it is supposed to pay much attention to this issue.But in recent years,there are serious problems in primary school's vocabulary class which impede the progress of students.Due to current problems it is necessary to come up with an effective teaching method.Among a number of research achievement,Phonics teaching method is an attractive method which pays attention to increase students' learning interest and improve students' English ability effectively.At present,although Phonics teaching method is still a relative fresh method it has solid theoretical foundation.The theoretical foundation of Phonics teaching method is Cognitive Development Theory and Learning Transfer Theory.Cognitive Development Theory is a meaningful theory and it holds that with the development of individuals the cognitive structure is continuously reconstructed in the interaction with the environment.Thus,Cognitive Development Theory shows different stages of development.It stresses that teachers are supposed to teach students based on students' characteristics.Learning Transfer Theory refers to the effect of existing learning experiences on new learning experiences.That is to say,it is the impact of knowledge experience,cognitive structure and learning strategies on new knowledge and skills.Nowadays,a lot of scholars are keen on studying the application of Phonics.But related literature review shows that there are a few researches about the applying of Phonics teaching method in English vocabulary class of primary school.The author would like to check the effectiveness of Phonics teaching method in English vocabulary class of primary school through several instruments which include test,questionnaire and interview.The author acted as a teacher in the First Experimental Primary School of Shangqiu and selected two classes randomly to conduct the experiment.The author chose one class as experimental class and the other one as control class.This experiment lasted four months from September 1st,2017 to January 3rd,2018.Before four-month experiment,the author considered the steps of the experiment around the following questions.(1)How is Phonics instruction used in English vocabulary class?(2)What can students learn from the English class after adopting Phonics?(3)What are the effects of Phonics instruction?The research process is described below.First of all,before experiment,students in both experimental class and control class are demanded to conduct pre-test.The teacher is able to check the English vocabulary ability of students.At the same time,all students are asked to finish pre-questionnaire.And the teacher can obtain general understanding of students' interest,attitude and evaluation about current teaching method.Secondly,this experiment is carried out from September 1st,2017 to January 3rd,2018 which lasts one semester.During experimental process,the control class uses traditional vocabulary teaching method as before but the experimental class uses Phonics teaching method.Thirdly,students of experimental class and control class conduct post-test to check students' English vocabulary ability after one-semester experiment.Then students are required to complete post-questionnaire which is the same as pre-questionnaire to examine the difference between these two questionnaires.The author randomly selects several students in experimental class to conduct interview to obtain more detailed information about students' interests,attitude and evaluation about current teaching method.Finally,the author collects all the data from pre-test,pre-questionnaire,post-test and post-questionnaire.Then the data is analyzed by SPSS software and the data is shown through tables.These tables display precise data of experimental class and control class.Thus,the author is able to compare the differences of the data.From the analyses the author could also compare traditional teaching method with Phonics teaching method in order to check the advantage of Phonics teaching method in primary school's English vocabulary class,and the main findings of this thesis are shown below.(1)Phonics is applied in English class by several steps including learning letter sounds,learning vowel and consonant sounds and learning combinations.(2)After adopting Phonics,teachers help students to obtain learning strategies and the spirit of cooperation with classmates.(3)Phonics instruction is able to increase students' learning interests,learning confidence toward English vocabulary after four months.This thesis is supposed to provide some useful and professional suggestions for further studies of primary school's education about Phonics teaching method in English vocabulary class.However,it has some shortcomings including the lack of experimental time and research subject.These limitations are expected to be improved by future study.All in all,the author proved the effectiveness of the application of Phonic teaching method in primary school's English vocabulary class through this thesis.
