The increasing deepening of the new curriculum reform enables the key competence of the subject to become a hot topic in the field of English education.As an important part of key competence,the cultivation of thinking quality has been increasingly paid attention to by the teaching researchers.English reading is always an important part of English teaching.The teaching of English reading is also one of the important ways to cultivate students’ thinking quality.English reading and thinking quality are complementary to each other.Reading itself and reading teaching can effectively cultivate students’ thinking quality,and good thinking quality can in turn help students to read effectively.However,the current practice of junior high school English reading teaching has proved that not enough attention has been paid to the cultivation of junior high school students’ thinking quality.Therefore,this research attempts to investigate the current situation of the cultivation of junior high school students’ thinking quality in the process of English reading teaching in order to find out its existing problems and influencing factors so that both realistic basis and teaching reference can be provided for the front-line English teachers to carry out their teaching practice of the English reading.Based on Piaget’s cognitive development theory and discourse analysis theory and starting from the current situation of the cultivation of thinking quality in junior high school English reading teaching,combined with such research methods as questionnaire,teacher interview and classroom observation and so on,this research mainly discusses the following three problems:(1)What is the understanding and attitude of junior high school English teachers towards the cultivation of students’ thinking quality in English reading teaching?(2)What are the problems in the cultivation of students’ thinking quality in junior high school English reading teaching?(3)What are the influencing factors upon the cultivation of students’ thinking quality in junior high school English reading teaching?In this research,100 English teachers and 500 students in junior high schools of Yuhang District of Hangzhou were selected as the research subjects.With the above methods,a thorough study is made of them so as to reach the following conclusions:(1)98% of the research subjects have a certain understanding of thinking quality cultivation and hold a positive attitude towards the importance and feasibility of cultivating thinking quality in English reading teaching at junior high schools;(2)With academic pressure and time limitation,28% of the English teachers pay more attention to the impart of language knowledge than to the cultivation of thinking quality,58% of the teachers believe that they find it hard to implement the cultivation of thinking quality because of their lack of mastery of the corresponding skills and methods;(3)The main factors which affect the cultivation of thinking quality include students’ cognitive level and original thinking ability,teachers’ ability to design and organize thinking training activities,academic pressure and the effect of traditional teaching methods,and the lack of teachers’ relevant professional and systematical training.Based on the above research results and findings,we have put forward some teaching suggestions for the cultivation of students’ thinking quality in English reading teaching in junior high schools,hoping to provide some practical guidance for junior high school English teachers to conduct their English reading teaching in the future.
