| Chunk is not only a kind of reasonable choices to underpin target language output but also one of significant factors to improve interpreting quality for its relatively fixed structure.During interpreting,the correct use of chunks is greatly conducive to reducing pressure burdened on interpreters and improving the efficiency of language understanding and decoding.It is worthwhile to explore the use of chunks in a contextual material like dialogue interpreting in a contest from a review of relevant literature released at home and abroad.Based on dialogue materials in the Sixth Hunan Provincial Translation and Interpreting Contest for Postgraduates,the author divides twelve contestants into a high-score group with six contestants and a low-score one with six,which are in line with their interpreting performance in this match.By utilizing a statistical software package to analyze the data quantitatively,the present study has yielded the four major findings.Firstly,the overall occurrence of correctly using chunks is relatively high,illustrating its strong competence in chunks usage.Secondly,in general,two groups show great significant difference in the frequency and types of chunks usage,demonstrating the higher achievers master more proper nouns and semi-technical chunks than the lower-ones.Thirdly,competitors with higher scores represent significantly better on the proficiency in chunks usage than that of the other group,especially from English to Chinese.Fourthly,significant correlation between the use of chunks and the score indicates that the more correct chunks,the higher grades.Having carried out the analysis,the author summarizes erroneous chunks’ causes,combined with the feedback,proposing corresponding coping strategies to provide several pragmatic measures for interpreting teaching and learning. |
