This report is written based on the author's practice as an interpreter for two police interrogations.From the perspective of turn-taking,the report probes into the mediation role of the interpreter in dialogue interpreting.Turn-taking happens in all conversational communications,in particular in dialogues and question-and-answer sessions.Traditional opinions hold that interpreter should remain objective,neutral and invisible in the interpreted event,yet the author,after her practice,found that a complete invisibility was not possible for the interpreter.Instead,due to different situations,the author of the report adopted a series of turn-managing strategies in her practice to guide the communication toward the right end.Such strategies include assisting in building turns,creating turns,interrupting turns and receiving turns.Through case analysis in the report,the author discovers that in interpreted events,the interpreter can help advance communication by adopting different turn-managing strategies in different situations.And that indicates that interpreter plays a role of mediator in real-time dialogue interpreting. |
