With the advancement of economic globalization,the ties between different countries in the world have been closer.With the continuous improvement of its international status and the development of the Belt and Road Initiatives,China has more and more frequent exchanges with other countries.And the scope of exchanges is gradually expanding.Therefore,it needs more intercultural communication talents.Intercultural communication competence(ICC)is an important criterion for cultivating these communicative talents.The basic stage of talent cultivation,that is,the high school stage,is a critical period for shaping students’ various abilities.English education should develop the cultivation of ICC in this stage.In 2020,the Ministry of Education of China published the latest National English Curriculum Standards for Common Senior High School(2017 Edition 2020 Revision).It clearly points out that high school English courses should help students further learn and use basics and skills and develop ICC in English teaching based on compulsory education.Therefore,the high school stage is crucial for cultivating students’ ICC.This thesis takes a high school in Haidian District,Beijing as an example.It selects 126 students from the Grade Two and 5 English teachers from the same school as the research subjects.Based on ICC theory,it conducts a case study of the current situation of cultivation of students’ competence through classroom observation method,questionnaire survey method and teacher interview method.The purpose of the classroom observation method is to understand more truthfully how teachers cultivate students’ ICC in the classroom;Questionnaire and interview methods are used to understand cultivation of students’ ICC from the perspectives of students and teachers respectively.To a certain extent,they can make up for the deficiencies of classroom observation.The research questions of this thesis include:1)What is the current situation of the cultivation of ICC in high school English teaching?2)Are there problems with current cultivation?If so,what are the problems?3)How does improve students’ICC in accordance with the requirements of Curriculum Standards(2017 Edition 2020 Revision)?According to the research results and requirements in Curriculum Standards,this thesis finds that the current situation of the cultivation of ICC in high school English teaching is general,and teachers have the following three problems in the teaching process:In terms of the teaching of cross-cultural knowledge,the scope of teaching is not wide enough and the teaching method is not flexible enough.In terms of the cultivation of students’ cross-cultural communication attitudes,it is not enough to stimulate students’ curiosity about cross-cultural communication and cultivate students’ cultural differences sensitivity.In terms of the cultivation of students’ cross-cultural communication skills,the cultivation of students’ verbal and non-verbal language communication competence needs to be improved.In order to solve the above problems,this thesis puts forward some suggestions for the school and the teacher.This is beneficial to cultivate students’ICC.As far as the school is concerned,the cultivation of students’ ICC can be used as one of the indicators of teacher evaluation.It can also create an English learning environment for students on campus.As far as the teacher is concerned,teachers can improve their own cross-cultural knowledge continuously,explore new teaching methods,select cross-cultural teaching contents reasonably,and simulate a relaxed and true cross-cultural communication situation for students in the classroom. |
