David Hockney is regarded as "the British national treasure artist" and "the godfather of British Art" in the international painting field nowadays. In his early artistic career,he was influenced by pop art: rigorous and orderly painting style, regular arrangement of geometric elements in the picture, and a sense of harmony and stability. In his naturalistic period, his works give people a kind of intimacy-like a moment in ordinary life.I think that these moments are deliberately made by Hockney,so that the viewer can integrate into the situation constructed by the author more easily. He describes his inner fanaticism and emotion with calm brushwork and gorgeous colors,as a result,he forms his own unique painting language, which has given me great influence. In this paper,it mainly studies the method of Hockney’s early naturalistic painting and inspiration to the my creation. The first chapter mainly describes the characteristics of ’naturalist’ painting, the historical background to David Hockney’s early naturalist paintings, his studies progress and his personal perspective of the era which he was in.In the context of the prevalence of abstract art at the time,David Hockney had a difficult time deciding between figurative and abstract painting and sought a balance and compromise between the two styles, and was later influenced by Pop Art,which laid the foundation for early naturalist painting. The second chapter mainly focuses on David Hockney’s naturalist works in terms of his choice of subject matter, colour representation, composition and his subjective treatment of the picture. In the second sub-section on composition,David Hockney’s unifying power over the general framework of the picture and the handling and use of point, line and surface in the picture are specifically described;the third chapter focuses on the influence that David Hockney’s work has had on the author. With the description of his own pictorial language and subjective treatment of the picture in his artistic creation around his personal creative subject matter, creative ideas and creative process.
