Abstract/Summary:
The research object of this paper is the text translation of the fourth chapter of the language educational text The Developing Language Learner: An Introduction to Exploratory Practice co-edited by Dick Allwright and Judith Hanks, which focuses on the discussion of learners as the key practitioners of development and presents five propositions about learners. This book brings together the views of experts in the field of language education and discusses the teaching methods under the guidance of exploratory practice. The source text is characterized by strong academic language, containing a lot of linguistic and pedagogical terminology, proper nouns for places and scholars,as well as many complex sentences with many insertions and modifiers. It is self-evident that faithful and expressive translation of theses languages will be a guarantee of the quality of the translation. As a result, the translator takes Linguistic Adaptation Theory, which was proposed by Jef Verschueren,a Belgian linguist and secretary-general of the International Society of Pragmatics in the 1990 s,as a guide for the translating work.Under the guidance of the three dimensions-contextual adaptation, language structural adaptation and dynamics of adaptability of the theory, such translation methods as conversion, change of part of speech, amplification and division were used to deal with the translation of terminology, complex sentences and context respectively, hoping the practice to shed some light on the future path of translating educational text for the writer and other translators.
