The International Energy Agency devotes itself to the oil market,energy conservation and the development and utilization of new energy sources.The annual oil market report,Oil 2020 Analysis and Forecast to 2025,released by the International Energy Agency,examines the key issues in demand,supply,refining and trade to 2025.The translation of such texts expects to help provide professional information for China’s oil industry.Based on the linguistic characteristics of the selected text,the translator chooses the translation shifts theory proposed by Catford as a guide to translate the text.The translator proposes that the translation of petroleum science and technology texts should follow three principles of accuracy,conciseness and fluency.Guided by the principles,the translator completes the translation practice.The problems encountered in the translation practice and translation techniques adopted to solve them are summarized by the translator at lexical,syntactical and textual level.The major findings are as follows.At lexical level,the translator pays extra attention to the context to ensure the accuracy of technical words and acronyms.Furthermore,techniques of amplification and readjustment of word order are used to translate long and complicated phrases.At syntactical level,techniques of voice conversion,amplification,division and readjustment of word order are adopted by the translator to produce fluent and accurate translation.At textual level,the translator uses the repetition of subjects,the readjustment of word order,and voice conversion to make the discourse more coherent and cohesive.
