A Report On The Chinese-English Translation Of Patent Application Documents In The Field Of Computer Technology

With the rapid development of globalization,enterprises all over the world are gradually strengthening independent innovation consciousness and intellectual property consciousness,and trans-regional intellectual property applications are increased.Therefore,patent translation plays an important role in international patent application.The source text of the translation practice report is a patent application document in the field of computer technology submitted by Alibaba Group Holding Limited.The translator,combining the internship experience of translating patent documents in RWS China,analyzes the language,law and technical issues in the Chinese-English translation of the patent application document,and explores corresponding translation methods for these issues.The report comprises five parts of introduction,task description,process description,case analysis and conclusion.The introduction describes the background,the purpose and significance,the task description gives the characteristics of the source text,and target readers,the process description introduces the preparation for translation,translation tools and techniques,and quality assurance.In the part of case analysis,the author,combining Reiss’ text type theory,selects some typical cases,and conducts detailed analysis in terms of language,law and technology in each component of the patent application document,such as the use of articles,fixed sentence patterns,requirements of relevant patent laws and regulations,patent-specific expressions,technical terms,and long and complicated sentences,etc.Conclusions can be drawn as follows: the patent application document is an informative text,and therefore rules of patent translation must be strictly followed during translation;in the translation of technical features mentioned in patent application documents,the use of definite and indefinite articles should be distinguished;attention should be paid to fixed sentence patterns,patent-specific expressions and technical terms in patent application documents;a translator should grasp the differences between Chinese and English,and figure out the logical relationship implicit in the source text;and attention should be paid to the consistency in patent application documents,etc.The author hopes the translation practice report can provide a reference for patent translation.
