| Disciplinary competency can be seen as the concrete embodiment of students’ ability in a certain subject.In English teaching,the disciplinary competencies consist of the key knowledge and skills required of a successful English learner.English classroom teaching is conducted through various activities designed by teachers.Students can acquire language knowledge and develop different competencies when they are engaged in different activities.Therefore,students’ English disciplinary competencies can be gradually cultivated through classroom activities.Most of the research on the English disciplinary competency in China remain at the theoretical level.In recent years,some lesson studies are conducted based on the English disciplinary competency.However,there is little research on teachers’ classroom activity design for English reading teaching based on the English disciplinary competency,which leaves research space for this thesis.The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the classroom activity design of senior high school English teachers in reading teaching based on the English disciplinary competency framework proposed by Wang Qiang’s research group.It is a case study.The participants of this study are three English teachers in senior two from The Middle School Attached to Sichuan University.The paper is going to answer the following three questions:(1)What activities are designed by the English teachers for their reading teaching?(2)What English disciplinary competencies are embodied in teachers’ classroom activity design?(3)What factors influence the cultivation of theEnglish disciplinary competency in the process of teachers’ classroom activity design?Through collecting,collating,and analyzing the data,the following results are obtained.First,most activities designed by teachers for English reading teaching are the comprehending activity.Only a few are the applying activity and the innovating activity,especially the innovating activity.Second,among the nine secondary competencies,the summarizing competency is addressed most often in teachers’ classroom activity design,followed by the perceiving competency,the retrieving competency and the analyzing competency.Third,the influencing factors of teachers’ classroom activity design for the cultivation of the English disciplinary competency are(1)teachers lack the theoretical knowledge about the English disciplinary competency;(2)teachers lack the relevant practical guidance;(3)some reality factors,such as pressures from large classes,workload and examination-oriented education,also influence teachers’ classroom activity design for the cultivation of the English disciplinary competency.The study can offer some data reference to related studies and give implications for teacher training and English teaching practice. |
