Segmentation,as an important technique in syntactic linearity of English-Chinese Simultaneous Interpreting(SI),is very popular with many professional interpreters and scholars.Under the guidance of Interpretive Theory, combining the "language structure focused theories" and "meaning-focused theories",the author takes the English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting of the First Hunan Provincial Contest of Simultaneous Interpreting as an example, whilst eight audios are selected as the research object.According to the source text of the Contest(English to Chinese)and the transcripts of the eight objects, the common segmentation positions shown by the objects are summarized and the student interpreters’ application of segmentation in SI is analyzed so as to conclude the specific and effective segmentation position in handling the long sentences in Chinese to English SI.Firstly, the source text is divided into eleven sense groups.Through the statistics on the number of long sentences in each sense group and the evaluation on the interpretation of the eight audios, the negative correlation between the density of long sentences and quality of SI is proved. As segmentation can release the memory burden and facilitate the interpreting speed,it is of great significance in handling long sentences in SI and is very effective to improve the quality of it.Furthermore, the student interpreters’ way to deal with long sentences at the positions including conjunctions, prepositions or prepositional phrases, relatives, infinitives, temporal adverbial and set-phrases or chunks will be considered as the specific positions of segmentation.Additionally, segmentation and reformulation application in long sentences in simultaneous interpreting will also be explored so as to provide some guidance and reference for future simultaneous interpreting training and practice. |
