Scholars have been dedicated to studying translations and interpreted speech.Mona Baker has put forward a claim of tendencies such as explicitation and simplification shared by translations. However, this claim is based on studies with Eurocentric language pairs and non-comparable corpus data.Data in the corpus often varied by length, genre, period, formality, and other dependent variables. Therefore, this study investigates general tendencies in interpreted English from Cantonese in a formal setting with the most limited variables. To test the hypothesis that interpreted speech from Cantonese to English shares patterns similar to what was found in previous research, source speech in Cantonese, target speech in Hong Kong English, and original Hong Kong English are compared according to different indicators. These data are extracted from the Chinese/English Political Interpreting Corpus. The conclusion is that there is a tendency of explicitation in Cantonese-English simultaneous interpreting even though,in general, interpreted English and original English resemble each other.
