| The source text of the report is the fifth chapter of Suffrage:Women’s Long Battle for the Vote, written by Ellen Carol Dubois,an American writer and suffragist. The book, published in 2020,is to honor the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution.American women are granted with voting rights in this Amendment. There are a large number of parentheses in the source text, which poses a challenge to a proper Chinese translation.Literature review covers the definition, classification, functions and translation strategies of parenthesis and researches on cohesion and coherence.Cohesion is achieved through multiple cohesive devices, while coherence is more subjective. The translator studies strategies for translating English parentheses into Chinese raised by Xu Mingwu,Zheng Shengtao and Bao Yan,and then makes adjustments to their techniques and uses altogether six ways to translate English parentheses. They are splitting sentences, restructuring, using parenthesis marks, embedding, adding words and keeping parenthesis in its original place.More than one approach is sometimes used in the translation of a single sentence. It is hoped that this report can be of inspiration for future studies on the translation of parentheses. But features of different source texts also need to be considered during translation, which requires that the translator should adjust properly in accordance with characteristics of the source text. |
