A Study On Pragmatic Function Of “Number+Adjectives+Quantifier” Construction

“Number + Quantifier” is a conventional combination in modern Chinese.Inserting adjectives between them constitutes “Number + Adjectives +Quantifier”.Taking “Number + Adjectives + Quantifier” as the research object,based on the construction grammar and subjective quantity theory,and the three metafunctions of language as the framework,this paper analyzes and describes the semantics of this structure,and observes its most significant functions in the text and interpersonal communication: Cohesive Function and Subjective Evaluation Function.The text consists of five chapters:The first chapter is introduction.This paper mainly combs the research results of“Number + Adjectives + Quantifier” in semantics,grammar and pragmatics,and sorts out the current academic research situations: there are more research results in semantics;the understanding of grammar is relatively consistent;pragmatic studies are scattered in semantic and grammatical studies and are in a blank stage.Therefore,this thesis mainly observes the pragmatic functions of “Number + Adjectives + Quantifier”in written materials from the pragmatic perspective.The second chapter describes the semantics of components and constructions of“Number + Adjectives + Quantifier”.There are three main points.First,the [+ quantity]meanings of numerals,adjectives and classifiers in “Number + Adjectives + Quantifier”are the semantic basis of the construction.Secondly,“Number + Adjectives +Quantifier” is a construction that expresses the speaker’s subjective comments on the objective quantity.There are different structural variants in the construction,which can be divided into typical construction and atypical construction.Third,there is an interactive relationship between component meaning and construction meaning,that is,component meaning restricts the emergence of construction meaning,and construction meaning determines the access conditions of component meaning.Chapter Three examines the distribution and the cohesive function of “Number +Adjectives + Quantifier” in different types of texts.The results show that: Firstly,in terms of language style,“Number + Adjectives + Quantifier” tends to appear in political comment style,literary style and literary style.In terms of mood types,“Number + Adjectives + Quantifier” tends to appear in indicative mood.Such distribution characteristics are compatible with the subjective commentary meaning of“Number + Adjectives + Quantifier”,and provide the corresponding textual context for the subjective evaluation function of the construction.Second,this construction is flexibly distributed in different linguistic units of the text.By means of ellipsis,reference and repetition of words,sentences and paragraphs are connected into complex sentences,sentence groups and texts with semantic relations such as explanation,obedience,comment,causality and parallelism.The fourth chapter analyzes the performance of the Subjective Evaluation Function of “Number + Adjectives + Quantifier” in interpersonal communication,and explains its causes from a cognitive perspective.this text thinks that: first,the Subjective Evaluation Function of this construction is mainly manifested in three aspects.(1)Different degrees of subjective large quantity and subjective small quantity can be expressed by means of glossary and context;(2)Expressing the speaker’s expectation from different perspectives;(3)Depend on context to express the speaker’s emotional attitude.Secondly,there are four causes for the s Subjective Evaluation Function of this construction:(1)Quantitative,subjective and evaluative meanings of components provide semantic basis for this constructions;(2)The competitive advantage of economic principles makes the construction develop and provides space for the expression of subjective evaluation;(3)The foregrounding of adjectives brings the speaker’s subjective cognition and emotion;(4)The increase in the difficulty of cognitive processing also makes the subjective feelings of the speaker easier to bring in.The fifth chapter is the conclusion.The conclusions drawn in this paper are summarized,and some shortcomings and areas for further study are explained.
