A Study Of Consecutive Interpreting Strategies For Press Conferences From The Perspective Of Eco-translatology

From the perspective of eco-translatology,the multi-dimensional transformation refers to the adaptation and selection made by the interpreter in linguistic,cultural and communicative dimensions.The linguistic dimension focuses on the adaptive selection in words,syntaxes and other linguistic forms.The cultural dimension highlights the interpretation of bilingual cultural connotations.The communicative dimension emphasizes on communicative intentionsThis thesis selects the Press Conference of WHO-China Joint Mission of COVID-19 as research materials and regards the multi-dimensional transformation of eco-translatology as the theoretical framework.This thesis aims to probe into motivations behind interpreters’multi-dimensional transformations and strategies that can be adopted by interpretersGuided by the three dimensions of eco-translatology,the case study leads to the following conclusions:1)In press conference settings,interpreters make multi-dimensional transformations for objective and subjective reasons.Objective reasons include the requirements of dealing with numerous technical terminologies,intense information loads and culture-loaded rhetorics.Subjective reasons focus on the need of coping with immense psychological stress.2)As for coping strategies from the perspective of eco-translatology,syntactic linearity,conversion,amplification and omission are possible methods for interpreters to use in the linguistic dimension.In the cultural dimension,interpreters can adapt to the culture of either the target or the source language.In the communicative dimension,strategies of ambiguity,judgement and compensation as well as gestures are ready for interpreters to serve communicative intentions.
