The ability of collaborative learning is considered to be one of the basic qualities in the21 st century. Both the English Curriculum Standard(2017)and the core literacy system of Chinese students(2014)encourage cooperative learning method.Collaborative learning is a process in which group members perform their duties and accomplish tasks together, which guided by the teachers. As a creative complement to traditional teaching methods, collaborative learning has been widely implemented in English reading classes. The reform of the new curriculum standard also proposes to apply collaborative learning to English teaching,so that students’ integrated English skills will be improved. Therefore, based on group dynamics and zone of proximal development theoretically, taking a senior high in Harbin as an example, the purpose of this survey is to investigate the current situation of collaborative reading in senior high school.Through questionnaires, classroom observation and interview, this research aims to figure out the following questions:1.What is the present situation of CL in English reading classes? 2.What are the effects of CL in senior English reading teaching? This research draws the following conclusions:(1)Students have a certain understanding of cooperative learning and they actively engage in cooperative reading, they are also willing to carry out more tasks with others, but some students have low motivations.Grouping pattern is fixed, basically students are grouped by their seats.Besides, cooperative activities are various, but the task of each student is not clear.Students’ activity time is unreasonable.Students lack self-evaluation and self-reflection after cooperative learning.(2)Cooperative learning can increase students’ enthusiasm in reading, making reading easier.Various cooperative activities enhance students’ interest in reading.Cooperative learning stimulates students’ sense of responsibility and enhances students’ initiatives for reading.Cooperative learning improves students’ communicative skills, and students can improve reading efficiency through discussion.Cooperation reading can cultivate students’ teamwork spirit and enhance friendship, thereby improving students’ reading effectiveness in general.Based on the above research results, suggestions were proposed for the students and the teachers:(1)Students should strengthen their sense of responsibility and actively participate in cooperative learning.(2)Students should conduct self-evaluation and self-reflection in time after collaborative reading.(3)Teachers are supposed to reasonably group students follow the principle of “heterogeneity within the group and homogeneity between the groups”.(4)Teachers are supposed to assign tasks clearly,so that everyone has task to do.(5)Teachers ought to strictly control the task time,so as to improve efficiency of collaborative reading.
