Since the early Qin Dynasty, the discussion about wen and tao has begun. As the core issue of ancient Chinese philosophy and aesthetics, the relationship between wen and tao plays an important role in the system of ancient Chinese literary theory. It carries the philosophical wisdom and ideal pursuit of ancient Chinese literary theorists, and has profound cultural and aesthetic values.Taking the English world as the research scope, this paper discusses the communication and translation of the relationship between wen and tao in the English world from the perspectives of Han Yu,Liu Tsung-yuan,Ouyang Xiu,Zhou Dunyi,Cheng Yi and Zhu Xi.Scholars in different periods have different views on the relationship between wen and tao. This paper will focus on the key articles of the above-mentioned literati on the relationship between wen and tao,and explore its translation and influence in the English world. However, there are few studies on the relationship between wen and tao in the West. The relationship between wen and tao in the Tang and Song Dynasties is not the focus of translators’ discussion and has not been studied by western scholars as a special issue of literary theory. When English translators only discuss the political changes, historical development and social trends in ancient China, they are concerned with the relationship between wen and tao in the Tang and Song Dynasties, and take it as an example of a certain thought to conduct a fragmentary study. Therefore, the research on the relationship between wen and tao in the Tang and Song Dynasties is not enough in both breadth and depth. This paper explores the research results of the relationship between wen and tao in the Tang and Song dynasties in the English world, lists and supplements English literature, compares and analyzes the translation and interpretation of the relationship between wen and tao in different English versions, and illustrates the characteristics of English translation and the differences between English translation and domestic research. This paper mainly analyzes the causes of these characteristics and differences from the aspects of cultural tradition, religious belief, aesthetic spirit and values, etc.,and then explores the influence of the relationship between wen and tao on English literary theory, analyzes the role and variation of the relationship between wen and tao in the construction of English literary theory, and affirms the strong vitality of Chinese literary theory and Western literary theory in the process of exchange, mutual learning and dialogue innovation. This not only promotes Chinese literary theory to go further to the world, but also promotes the exchange and mutual learning between Chinese and Western literary theories to add new and rich theoretical resources for contemporary literary criticism and creation, actively construct Chinese literary theory, and strengthen cultural confidence. This paper consists of six chapters. The first chapter summarizes the translation and introduction of the Tang and Song wen and tao relations in the English world. In chronological order, this paper sorts out the representative translation results of Tang and Song wen and tao in the English-speaking world after the 20th century. In the English world, the study of the relationship between wen and tao in Tang and Song dynasties also experienced a process from strangeness to familiarity. In the middle of the 20th century, the study of the relationship between wen and tao in the Tang and Song dynasties in the English world is relatively simple, mainly based on simple and quoted translation. In the 1970s,the Western Sinology circle often focused on a certain character in the Tang and Song Dynasties, and advocated to discuss the relationship between wen and tao in the Tang and Song dynasties in connection with his literary theory. In the 1980s,the English speaking world had a richer perspective on the study of the relationship between wen and tao in the Tang and Song dynasties. After the 21st century, the English-speaking world has paid more attention to the philosophical thoughts and literary theories of Song agent scholars, and most of the discussions about the relationship between wen and tao are interspersed in the text.In addition, there are also some discussions on the relationship between wen and tao in the English speaking world. The second chapter analyzes the translation of Han Yu’s relationship between wen and tao in the English world.By combing the English literature, this paper analyzes the different translation methods of Han Yu’s "wen" and "tao" and the relationship between them.Although Han Yu’s clearly put forward in "xiu ci i ming tao" has not been given due attention in the English world,Han Yu’s idea of "wen i ming tao" is highly accepted in the English world. At present, there are three kinds of translation of "文" in the English World:"Wen","literary" and "writing".Although Han Yu has clearly put forward the proposition of "xiu ci i ming tao",a more detailed explanation of the "tao" is in Yuan Dao.Through comparative analysis of different English translators’ translations of Yuan Dao,it can be found that Han Yu’s the lineage of tao has not been fully translated and explained in the English version. The third chapter discusses the English world’s interpretation of Liu Tsung-yuan’s "wen i ming tao" in his book "ta wei chung-li Lun Shih tao shu".By studying the translation of Liu Tsung-yuan’s "wen" in English version, the connotation of Liu Tsung-yuan’s "wen" is further clarified. The English translators also notice the difference between Han Yu’s wen and Liu’s wen.The scope of Liu’s wen is more extensive, and most of the English versions translate Liu’s "文" into"Literature".On the basis of Confucianism, the English translation pays more attention to Liu Tsung-yuan’s "the tao of aiding the age and extending[benefit]to things "and emphasizes the important role of practice. On the basis of this, this paper further discusses the interpretation of Liu Tsung-yuan’s "wen i ming tao " in the English version. In the English world, there are many researches on " literature illumines the tao ".Most English scholars use a similar translation form " literature illumines the tao".The four chapter investigates the translation of Ouyang Xiu’s "Tao Sheng Wen Zhi" in the English world. This idea was clearly put forward in a reply to Wu Chong’s Xiucai book.On the basis of exploring the relationship between Ouyang Xiu’s wen and tao,the English translator points out that Ouyang’s wen is not formal wen,but combined with tao.The English translators believe that the Ouyang Xiu’s tao is not to " abandon all public affairs ",but closely related to social life. This paper aims to reveal the characteristics of "Dao Sheng Wen Zhi" in the English world by showing the translation of Ouyang Xiu’s wen and tao in the English world.English scholars have explained Ouyang Xiu’s opposition to the form of writing, noted Ouyang Xiu’s concern about social and public affairs, and believed that the proposal of "Dao Sheng Wen Zhi" was related to Ouyang Xiu’s political ideas.Chapter fifth focuses on the translation and introduction of the relationship between wen and tao of Song Scholars. This chapter will focus on Zhou Dunyi,Cheng Yi and Zhu Xi,and discuss their translation and introduction.Different from scholars in Tang Dynasty, the scholars in Song Dynasty have similar attitudes towards wen and tao and the relationship between them.,both of which attach importance to tao and despise wen.Whether it is Zhou Dunyi’s proposition that "wen is a vehicle for tao " in Tongshu,or Cheng Yi’s "wen harms tao",or Zhu Xi’s"the unity of literature and Tao",the Neo Confucianism of Song Dynasty has promoted "tao" to the level of philosophical ontology, and further expanded the scope of "wen".In their attitude towards the relationship between wen and tao, they all attach importance to tao rather than wen.Although English translators still use"wen","tao" and other translation forms, they also pay attention to the differences in connotation when interpreting sentences, and reveal the understanding of the relationship between wen and tao by different theorists. The sixth chapter explores the reasons for the divergence of the relationship between wen and tao in the English world, and analyzes the influence of the relationship between wen and tao in the English world.According to the different translation methods used by English translators to explore the relationship between wen and tao in Tang and Song Dynasties, this paper mainly analyzes the factors influencing translation from the aspects of cultural traditions, religious beliefs, aesthetic spirit and values. As the core proposition of ancient Chinese literary theory, the relationship between wen and tao also influenced the development of Western Literary Theory in the process of translation. Some English translators take the relationship between wen and tao as the main topic of discussion;some take the society, history and ideology of the Tang and Song dynasties as the research center, refer to the research results of Chinese scholars on the relationship between wen and tao, supplement and enrich the research content;some translators take the relationship between wen and tao as the contrast of western literary theory.By summing up the factors affecting the translation of the relationship between wen and tao in Tang and Song Dynasties, this paper discusses the influence of the relationship between wen and tao,so as to strengthen the value of Chinese literary theory, promote the in-depth communication of Chinese and Western literary theory, and prosper the world literary theory. In short, the study of the translation and influence of the relationship between wen and tao in the English world is based on the understanding of the relationship between wen and tao by English translators.By analyzing the views of Han Yu,Liu Tsung-yuan,Ouyang Xiu,Zhou Dunyi,Cheng Yi,Zhu Xi and other scholars in the Tang and Song Dynasties, this paper presents the translation and introduction of the relationship between wen and tao in the English world.Connecting with the differences in culture, religion, aesthetics and values between China and the west, this paper reveals the reasons for the variation and points out the influence of the relationship between wen and Tao in the western world.Only by deeply exploring the translation and introduction of the theory of relationship between wen and tao in the Tang and Song dynasties in the English world can we truly realize the equal exchange between Chinese and Western literary theories and promote the "going out" of Chinese literary theories. This not only provides theoretical resources for the development of western literary theory, but also further affirms the value of Chinese literary theory itself, promotes the development of Chinese literary theory itself, and is conducive to enhancing the international influence of Chinese literary theory.
