This paper is objected on inkstones and related remains in Tang andSong dynasties. Analysed inkstones in this area using typology and set upthe division standard of typology. On the premise of typology, set up thestaging and sequence of inkstones. On the basis of staging, thesimilarities and differences of inkstones in different places wasinvestigated. The inheritance and development in each period was alsomade clear. Finally the paper studied the status of the owner of the graveand the function of the waterjar.The content of the paper is divided into six partsPart one: PrefaceDefined the research object and spatial-temporal framework of thestudy. Summarized the achievements of previous research and deficiencyof current study, pointed out the research method and research purpose of this paper.Part two: Typology analysis of inkstonesUsing typology method, analysed inkstones in Tang and Songdynasties. Made clear the types of inkstones and the development of eachtype of inkstones’ evolution in this areaPart three: The period of inkstonesAccording to the materials of tomb with dated inscription andcoexistence with inkstones, the age of the inkstones was determined. Onthis basis, in the center of shape evolution inkstones’ development andevolution suggest five process: late6thcentury to early8thcentury, early8thcentury, early9thcentury to middle10thcentury, middle10thcentury toearly12thcentury, early12thcentury to late13thcentury.Part four: Regional study of inkstonesOn the basis of staging, analysed the similarities and differences ofinkstones in different places, investigated the inheritance anddevelopment in different areas. Document and other archaeologicalmaterials explained the phenomenon. Part five: Related issuesDiscovered identity characteristic of the owner of the grave and thefunctions of the waterjar as coexistence with inkstones.Part six: ConclusionSummarized the main research and perspectives of the paper.
