The materials for the translation practice are selected from Aid for Trade at a Glance 2019:Economic Diversification and Empowerment,a joint publication issued by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and World Trade Organization in 2019 during the "Global Review Meeting of Aid for Trade".The Aid for Trade at a Glance 2019:Economic Diversification and Empowerment falls into nine chapters.The first chapter briefly introduces the background of aid for trade.The second chapter gives the information of aid for trade,economic diversification and economic empowerment of countries across the world in recent years.The following chapters analyze in detail the important role of industrialization in economic diversification,the challenging contexts of aid for trade,the positive role of trade facilitation and export diversification,and generalize the experiences and lessons of economic diversification and economic empowerment.The translation text is the second chapter of this publication:Aid for Trade:Economic Diversification and Economic Empowerment.This chapter explores the various ways in which donors have helped developing countries build trade capacity through aid for trade since the launch of the aid for trade initiative.It has been shown that the aid for trade has helped developing countries improve their market competitiveness and promote their diversified development.Despite these positive results,many developing countries continue to focus on low value-added activities.That calls for the aid programmes to focus more clearly on diversifying the economy and creating jobs for women and youth.From the perspective of text type,this text is an economic and trade report published by international organizations,and thus can be classified as business text.It has distinct textual features:Its language is formal,rigorous,and pithy with high accuracy.Content words,terms concerning trade and abbreviations are frequently used.Furthermore,the text is well organized with strong logic.Some sentences are laden with information and sentence structures are much more complex.All these pose a challenge for the translator.In this translation process,there arise many difficulties.For example,at lexical level,some terms do not have fixed translations and the collocative meaning of some words cannot be determined;while difficulties at syntactic level include information-loaded complex sentences and omissions.Aiming at the above problems,the author has adopted a series of solutions in the process of translation,including reference to parallel texts,concretization,combination and supplement,and split and recombination,so as to make the translations more accurate and better.The main contents of the practice report include the overview of the translation practice,the analysis of problems in the translation and the generalization of strategies.It is divided into six chapters:Introduction,Overview of the Translation Task,Translation Process,Problems in Translation Practice,Solutions and Summary of the Translation Practice.
