Since the reform and opening-up,China has entered a track of rapid development with great achievements in all undertakings which have been admired by the whole world, and China’s urbanization,in particular, has been promoted remarkably.Urbanization’s development needs sound infrastructural supply, and the cities’ construction with international character needs more and more foreign companies to participate in their infrastructural construction. Moreover, more and more foreign companies are willing to start new business or make investments in China. It is an international practice to start foreign cooperation in the mode of bidding, and English bidding and tendering documents are the basic elements to carry out such cooperation.Nevertheless,C-E translation of bidding or tendering texts lacks research and achievements. The tendering document for IKEA shopping center project as the research object of the report enjoys the normal linguistic features of constructional tendering texts,i.e.,there are many terminologies on construction and environmental protection, etc.,and lots of non-subject sentences as well as complicated long run-on sentences, what’s more, some texts with covert cohesive devices dwell in the original text, which are all the important or difficult points in translating. The author hopes that some practical refences and could be provided to translate similar texts after some general rules and experience had been concluded based on researching the translation of the above important or difficult points.Functional Equivalence Theory(hereinafter refer to FET)put forward by Nida,a famous American translator, has evolved into a mature theory after many-year development. For it has a complete set of translation criteria and adjustment principles,it could effectively guide and check the translation,in addition,FET emphasizes the response of receptors, which conforms to the translation requirements of a tendering text.Based on FET,this report mainly discuss the translation of bidding documents from three levels of lexicons, syntaxes and texts and it focuses on the translation of some terminologies whose forms needs to be determined, some non-subject sentences and some long sentences whose clauses’ relation should be figured out and adjusted in translating as well as some texts whose coherence and cohesion need to be changed in translating, and this report employs translation techniques like omission, conversion, amplification, voice converting, inversing word order and adding conjunctions, etc.to address the problems and difficulties in translating.Through this translation practice, the author concluded the adjustment principle in translating:the original form should be retained as much as possible on the premise that the original message could be delivered accurately, and the message should be rendered at first when conflicts arise between the form and the content in translating. |
