This report is completed in accordance with the source text,Pain Management,a module of an online medical curriculum: ELNEC(End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium),which contains more than 12,000 English words and is divided into six sections.Pain management is an essential aspect of end-of-life nursing education. The source text gives an overall introduction to the principles and methods of pain assessment and management, providing the healthcare professionals, patients, and their families with vital treatment references and guidance.Under the framework of “Comprehension,Expression, and Adaptation”(CEA)proposed by Professor Li Changshuan, the author completed the translation task. The source text, categorized as a medical text, poses a variety of challenges to the author, such as intense technicality and objectivity,as well as extensive use of medical terms and expressions. In the meantime, the language of the source text is concise with complex sentences widely used. The author is supposed to overcome these challenges guided by the “CEA” framework. In the Comprehension phase, the author fully comprehends the source text at lexical, syntactic, and textual levels with the help of dictionaries and parallel texts. In the Expression phase, the expressions in the target text meet the requirements of medical science by avoiding overforeignized Chinese, achieving conciseness, and keeping the target text technical. In the Adaptation phase, adjustments, additions, omissions, and conversions are applied to produce a fluent translation. This report explores and focuses on the Chinese translation of a medical text.Different translation theories are quoted under the framework of the “CEA”.Diverse methods are used in the translation,in order to inspire other translators working on similar texts.Meanwhile, this translation task is expected to provide an accurate and complete bilingual medical discourse for pain management.
