"Lines" is the basic means of image shaping in Chinese painting. As an image-shaping element,it also carries the painter’s feelings and thoughts towards nature.Like other painting types of traditional Chinese painting, the "lines" in landscape painting come from the brush stroke in Chinese calligraphy.Brushes, rice papers and rich techniques, which make the "lines" have special aesthetic feeling, endow the quality requirements of "bony brushstrokes" and lay the foundation for the most fundamental spiritual force of landscape painting.Through "Lines",the shape and structure of the landscape image can be expressed, the external beauty and the essence beauty of the landscape are reflected, and the painter’s rich thoughts and emotions are expressed.Through the feeling and understanding of nature, the painter uses the thickness, speed, density, weight, concentration and other changes of the modeling lines of landscape painting to show the space, rhythm, strength and spirit of the landscape image in the form of ink, giving the concentrated and generalized expression of the landscape image which originates from life and more refined than life.Guilin’s landscape occupies a unique aesthetic position in Chinese natural resources, which attracted many artists to come here to appreciate and created many works.Guilin is located in subtropical climate and karst landform. It is rich in plants and typical limestone rocks. It has abundant rainfall, unique trees and high peaks, some of which are independent, and some are continuous. The water of Lijiang River is clear and passes through the city. The mountains on both sides are very attractive and there are boats sailing across the river. The lines of plants, rocks, buildings and banks are obvious, not only beautiful but also magnificent.Painters of all ages have a special love for Guilin’s landscape.Famous artists such as Huang Binhong,Li Keran,Bai Xueshi,Lu yanshao etc.especially take Guilin’s landscape as their subject and their works have added a strong achievement to the history of Chinese painting.Huang Binhong has created a large number of works depicting Guilin landscape. His landscape paintings depict the romantic charm of Guilin landscape with unique lines and ink colors. The "lines" in his works look "messy" but are in fact very regular. The pen in his hand freely expresses itself on the paper following a free mood, seemingly random but in fact carefully regulated. With profound painting skills, his landscape painting weaves the varied lines and ink innature into a symphony with fluctuating rhythm.Li Keran created a new realm on the basis of Huang Binhong’s and Qi Baishi’s paintings. He pursued the steadiness and implication of brush lines, the power of image creation, and the perfection of every stroke. He organically combined lines with the changes of chapped brush and ink colors, integrated the understanding of light in western paintings, absorbed the essence of nature’s modeling, and created the painting language of landscape painting with distinct personal style and grasping the modeling characteristics of objects, which influenced and promoted the creation thought, expression and development of modern and contemporary landscape painting.Li Keran went to Guilin for painting many times, searched for, extracted and summarized lines in Guilin ’s mountains and rivers, studied the image characteristics of Guilin’s landscape, the dialectical relationship between line and ink, line and surface, and had formed a vivid image with the characteristics of beauty, gentle, moist, changeable, thickness, majestic and other characteristics of the vivid painting image.Bai Xueshi loves the landscape of Guilin and his representative works are almost inseparable from the landscape of Guilin.Bai Xueshi walked along the Lijiang River for many times, and carefully observed, understood and experienced the natural image and unique culture of Guilin’s landscape. His works are full of the green hills and clear water in Guilin. The lines of Bai Xueshi’s landscape painting is clean, neat, lively and vigorous, and is faithful to the objects of mountains and rivers, has a high degree of generalization, and has the characteristics of western painting, integrating the decorative meaning of arts and crafts. The plants and scenery on both sides of the Lijiang River are lifelike.Through the lines clearly and decisively carved out,the continuous mountains look rigorous, strong, exquisite, capable and clear, creating a poetic realm for us.If Li Keran uses steady and powerful lines to support the thick color of the ink, then Bai Xueshi uses fresh ink to set off the clean and beautiful sketch.Lu Yanshao experienced the profound traditional skills when he painted Guilin’s landscape, and made a long-term observation, understanding and description of the landscape features.Lu Yanshao pays attention to the line expression of landscape painting. He can shape objects with lines, especially the clouds and rivers. He studies the relationship between the dry and wet,the length, the fuzziness and the density of lines, and pursues lively ink effect. His combination of fast and slow strokes is very rhythmic.Even if he renders,he does not forget to use of pen in calligraphy. In his drawing,we can see the trace of the pen in ink,the combination of dry and wet and great passion. The landscape features of Guilin in Lu Yanshao’s works are bold and show strong characteristics of the times. As a graduate student,I have studied inGuangxi Normal University for three years. On the one hand,I deeply studied the landscape of Guilin, observed life, collected materials and experienced nature. On the other hand,I have studied deeply the tradition, studied the landscape painting techniques of ancient and modern painters, especially absorbed nutrition from the landscape paintings of Guilin by modern and contemporary famous artists, studied their innovative spirit based on the tradition, and tried hard to apply it to the specific painting practice.I have continuously enriched myunderstanding of landscape painting, accumulated practical experience and improved the skills of landscape painting. In the past three years, under the guidance of my tutor,I copied some classical works of ancient and modern landscape paintings, further studied and understood the line performance of landscape paintings drawn by Huang Binhong,Li Keran,Bai Xueshi,Lu yanshao and other painters, analyzed the skills created by the painters, and appreciated the spiritual sentiment of the painters. On this basis,I took the scenery of Guilin and surrounding areas as the object of research and exploration, analyzed the natural landscapes and cultural landscapes of Guilin, and experienced the local life.In addition, from the aspects of observing life, collecting materials, painting exercises, induction, and image shaping,I conducted training on landscape painting shaping for specific objects such as plants, rocks, buildings, and ornaments in Guilin landscape.I have conducted a more in-depth study on the relationship between line as the basic expression means of landscape painting and the unity of opposites between line and ink color, and my painting skill has been greatly improved. In this process,I gradually grasped the characteristics of typical plants in Guilin’s landscape, including banyan trees, camphor trees, pine trees, miscellaneous trees and bamboo trees,as well as the characteristics of the peaks on both sides of the Lijiang River, including Mount Duxiu,Mount Elephant Nose and Mount Diecai.I also grasped the drawing characteristics of Palace of Prince Jing,Yanshan Garden, ethnic minority buildings, boats and bridges along the Lijiang river, and they have been deeply depicted by constantly skillful lines of landscape paintings.I have realized the profound significance of the expression language of the lines of landscape painting, and the relationship and important role of the lines of landscape painting with composition, blank processing and ink color processing. Therefore,in the process of writing this paper,I hope that through my experience of Guilin’s landscape,my understanding of the painting skills of well-known painters and my own experience in Guilin’s landscape painting,I can analyze and summarize some theories to accumulate and provide a little experience for my future creation and the painting career in the theme of Guilin’s landscape. |
