Reading is an important way for human beings to obtain information.Middle school is an important stage for teenagers to develop their reading habits.Reading plays an important role in improving their English ability and promoting their all-round development.Due to the limited teaching time in reading class,extracurricular reading in language learning highlights its importance and necessity.In order to understand the current situation of English extracurricular reading of senior high school students and improve their reading level,this paper is based on Krashen’s language input hypothesis and autonomous learning theory.Through the methods of questionnaire and interview,270 students from an urban school in Taiyuan and 283 students from a rural school were investigated.It mainly studies the following problems:What’s the status quo of English extracurricular reading of high school students in urban and rural areas? What are the similarities and differences?What are the problems of English extracurricular reading for urban and rural high school students? What is the reason?The results show that there are differences and similarities in six aspects:self-assessment of English reading,attitude and motivation to English reading,amount and frequency of reading,selection of materials,effect and obstacles,reading strategies and habits.Generally speaking,the current situation of extracurricular reading of urban senior high school students should be slightly better.There are many problems for rural students: lack of recognition of the importance of English reading;lack of interest and motivation;lack of time and reading volume;lack of the ability to choose appropriate materials;lack of vocabulary as the main obstacle to reading;lack of strategies and good habits.According to the current situation,combined with relevant theories and research,the author analyzes the reasons.According to the results,the author puts forward some suggestions for rural teachers and students,including understand the importance of reading and ways of learning English;read original books under the guidance of teacher;improve input efficiency in learning;choose various forms of materials;combine individual work and cooperation;develop reading strategies and habits.
