The English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2017)points out that teachers should actively create conditions to encourage and guide students to do extracurricular learning and ensure the students to read more than 1500 words a week after school. And the total amount of reading is no less than 45,000 words per week. This study selected 600 students from three senior high schools in Duyun City,Qiannan Prefecture as the research subjects, and conducted research on students' English extracurricular autonomous reading. The research mainly answers the following questions:1.What is the overall situation of students' extracurricular autonomous reading(EAR)in senior high schools?2.Are there any significant differences between different grades?3.Are there any correlations between the five dimensions of EAR?4.What are the factors affecting the students' EAR?Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used as research methods, and SPSS software was used to analyze the quantitive data with descriptive statistics,one-way ANOVA and correlation analysis, and qualitative analysis was used for the semi-structured interview. The results of this study are as follows: The EAR of senior high school students in the Qiannan Area is generally at a medium level. There is no significant difference in EAR between each grade. There is a significant positive correlation between the dimensions of EAR.Internal and external factors affect the EAR of senior high school students. The internal factors include the students' lack of language skills, less confidence,no interest and perseverance, and weakness in metacognitive consciousness. The external factors include that teachers do not have high requirements for students or enough supervision. At the same time, schools lack English reading resources. In response to the research results, the author puts forward strategies to improve students' English EAR.Students should pay attention to the mastery and application of language knowledge and should establish a better standpoint on EAR.Furthermore, teachers should pay attention to students' metacognition in EAR and should pay attention towards their guidance and implementation of effective supervision. Finally, schools should provide adequate reading materials.
