| The translation material used for this practice report is excerpted from The‘Language Instinct’ Debate written by Geoffrey Sampson in 2003.In this book,Sampson mainly addresses the issue of the historical development of innateness hypothesis and makes critical responses to the arguments and evidence of some well-known nativists,including Steven Pinker,Noam Chomsky,etc.In this way,readers are able to develop a comprehensive understanding of nativism and broaden their academic vision,and also,hopefully,helps promote their linguistic researches.The translator chooses to use Skopos theory proposed by theorists from German Functionalist School as a guiding theory,and specifically she uses the three rules of Skopos theory,including Skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule as the guiding rules.During the translation process,the translator encountered many difficulties in relation to terminology from various fields,long and complex sentences with difficult-to-analyse structures,passive sentences and sentences with extraordinary rhetorical devices.To solve the problems,the translator uses zero translation,annotation,division,amplification and other translation skills under the guidance of Skopos theory,trying to help the target readers better understand what the author intends to express.There are seven chapters in this translation report,which are task description,process description,analysis of the source text,theoretical basis,translation problems and solutions,quality control and reflection.In chapter one,task source and content are briefly described and target readers are also made clear.In addition,the translator explains the significance of this translation practice.In chapter two,the translator makes a brief description of the whole translation process,namely the pre-translation,the in-translation and the post-translation stages.And then,the translator summarizes the main characteristics of the source text at lexical,syntactic and textual levels.In the next chapter,the translator gives detailed description about the theoretical basis.After that,some translation problems and solutions are discussed for illustration of how the translation versions are made.In chapter six,description and explanation are made ofquality controls conducted by the translator,peers and the supervising professor respectively.Lastly,the translator makes reflections on this translation practice. |
