A Report On Chinese-English Translation Of Essentials Of Intellectual Property:Institutional Innovation And Knowledge Innovation(Chapter Eight)

This report is based on the Chinese-English translation of “Economic Analysis of China’s IPR Regime: Effectiveness and Benefits”,an excerpted chapter from the book Essentials of Intellectual Property: Institutional Innovation and Knowledge Innovation.The source text(ST)provides a new perspective for readers to understand China’s intellectual property rights(IPR)system,involving three parts: property rights definition and institutional choice of IPR,property rights transaction and the use of IPR,and property rights protection and legal remedies of IPR.The translator analyzes the characteristics of the ST from lexical,syntactic and textual level.At the lexical level,nominalization is typical in the ST,which includes proper nouns in economic and legal fields and words with quasi-affixes.At the syntactic level,most sentences are long with complex structures,including loose sentences,coordinate complex sentences etc.At the textual level,the ST is clearly structured to express academic perspective of the original author,with the formal and objective style.Based on the characteristics of the ST and the requirements of the clients,the translator adopts Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory to guide the translation practice.Under the guidance of communicative translation,the translator aims to meet three standards in this translation practice: accuracy,naturalness,and equivalent-effect.Under the accuracy standard,the translator ensures the preciseness of terms by consulting dictionaries and adopting the established expression.Based on the naturalness standard,the translator helps the target readers to enjoy a better reading experience through using translation techniques such as reconstruction,shift and omission.Under the equivalent-effect standard,the translator ensures the consistency of discourse style between the ST and the target text(TT)by the use of cohesive devices and other translation methods.Through the above analysis,the translator finds that under the guidance of communicative translation theory,the translator could faithfully convey the original information of the ST and ensure the best reading effect for TT readers.Meanwhile,the translator hopes to translate the ST under the guidance of communicative translation theory,so as to shed some light on a new perspective for the academic paper translation.
