China is a multi-ethnic country and in its history of thousands of years,an enormous number of paintings reflecting the cultures of ethnic minorities have remained.Earlier paintings were intended to eulogize the ruling classes and served as a witness to history and culture, whereas modern works,on this basis, are supposed to reveal not only the outer characteristics but also the emotions and inner qualities of a specific ethnic minority. The tendency and popularity of ethnic minority-oriented paintings in modern times may be due to the duel needs of both politics and culture. In places where the ethnic minorities of China live and work, there are enormous ethnic traditions and cultures, among which their ethnically characteristic costumes, festive activities and customs have all become perfect themes for artists’ creations, which differentiate each other because of diverse customs, aesthetic standards and geographies. These differences are exactly what distinguish each ethnic minority and present unique geographical features. As important themes for artistic creation, ethnic minority-oriented paintings must combine ethnic images with art,a topic worthy of discussion and research,in an attempt to lay a solid foundation for ethnic prosperity.Since the birth of new China, economic development has been accelerating and with it cultural development has come along. As a result,an enormous number of excellent works on the ethnic minorities have been created by quite a few painters such as Zhou Sicong,Huang Zhou,Liu Guohui,Shi Guoliang and Chen Mengxin, whose works express, with traditional techniques, not only the humanities of the whole of Chinese people but also reveal directly the customs, traditions and living conditions of the ethnic minorities. This paper falls into four parts.First, the definition and understanding of traditionalink paintings and then following the ancient peoples in history, research into creativeness of ethnic minority-oriented ink paintings through analysis of works by painters both recorded in history and alive now and analysis of literature review.Second, research into the application and aesthetics of character images of ethnic minorities in modern artistic paintings, and meanwhile analysis of expressiveness,in Chinese paintings,of geographical features, differences in ethnic traits and cultural elements.Third, conveyance of ethnic spirits by examples of the painters’ way to achieve realism, exaggeration and deformation, and finally decoration. Finally, the author’s analyses and reflections of the present situation and inadequacy of the application of ethnic-minority characters in ink paintings, with the inadequacy summarized in an attempt to innovate ethnic minority-oriented Chinese paintings,to create diverse, highly expressive ethnic minority-oriented works with authentically traditional aesthetics.Through carding and reasoning, this paper holds the opinion that culture-specific elements have given a push to traditional Chinese paintings, played a special role in the conveyance of the painting language and have been an essential style in the creation of ink paintings.
