| The War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression in Western Yunnan was the earliest of strategic counter-offensive attacks in the fourteen-year warfare that took place in the China Theater. It was considered as one of the turning points in the battles against fascism in Asia in the Second World War.Confronted with slaughtering, abuse, and enslaving in the war,the Chinese military and civilians fought courageously against the Japanese invaders at the sacrifice of their lives. Now 70 years has passed and the tragedy seems to be passing farther away but,all the heroic achievements by the martyrs and all the sacrifices by the ethnic peoples in Western Yunnan will never be forgotten. With a gradual relaxation of the intense relations between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan since the 1980 s,the war has been drawing a worldwide attention and become a fresh theme in the historian circle for their researches on the Chinese War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. The source text is extracted from The War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression in Western Yunnan,a book that was published in 2010.It provides a detailed introduction to the war in terms of its background, process, and heroic deeds that were conducted by the Chinese military and civilians, and the unfailing support from the international community at that time. The translator is entrusted with the translation of chapters 9 and 10 which primarily give a survey to the achievements and patriotic deeds of the martyrs who came from both the Chinese Expeditionary Forces and the ethnic groups in Western Yunnan.Throughout the whole translation process, she has given a full play to her subjectivity in the three stages of selecting the original material, understanding the source text, and expressing in an appropriate way in the target language. She attempts to come up with a version that conforms to idiomatic expression of the prospective readers at the premise of offering them precise information. This report analyzes cases selected from the translation practice at both the linguistic and cultural levels. It reveals how the translator solved the problems she encountered through her deliberate choice of translation methods such as transliteration and conversion.Part One of the report is an introduction to the translation project including background, significance, objectives and other factors.Part Two introduces the three stages of the translation: pre-translation,intranlation,and post-translation,with a focus on the features of the source text and the concrete problems encountered in the translation.Part Three is a brief on the translator’s subjectivity in terms of connotation, manifestation and restriction.Part Four is an analysis about some cases selected from the translation and viewed from the perspective of translator’s subjectivity. In Part Five,a conclusion about the project is conducted with problems and shortcomings summarized. The translator has become fully aware of the necessity and challenge to translate historical materials. To make her version better accepted among the prospective readers, she has remained preoccupied with such issues as the translator’s subjectivity, the target readers’ habit, the successful transfer of the cultural connotation, and the accurate convey of information from the source text. |
