The War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression in Western Yunnan is a historical text,whose content is authentic,objective and candid.Because of the large number of historical materials,the book wins a high reputation in the research circle of modern war history in Yunnan Province with a great academic value.Its English translation can provide the readers with detailed materials,so it is conducive to the international spread of the historical events occurred in that period.This translation project involves the first chapter of the book which mainly describes the situation at home and abroad before the outbreak of the war and the major events that took place from November 1937 to November 1946.Having made an analysis of the translation project and a comparison of various translation theories,the translator chose the Relevance Translation Theory as theoretical guidance for her translation practice.The Relevant Translation Theory proposes that sufficient contextual information be provided to the target readers through various translation methods so that they can catch the informative intentions of the original author and achieve the optimal relevance with effective efforts.This translation report consists of five parts.The first part introduces the translation project,including the backgrounds and the values for translation.The second part describes the translation process,including preparations in the stage of pre-translation,different processing methods in translation,and proofreading after translation.The third part focuses on the Relevance Translation Theory,including its research status both at home and abroad,major representative researchers and their viewpoints as well.The fourth part is the case analysis.Under the guidance of Relevance Translation Theory,the translator analyzes some typical examples in details from lexical,syntactic and cultural levels by using all kinds of means,such as literal translation,transformation,amplification,combination,division,voice change,and free translation.The fifth part is conclusion that summarizes the experiences the translator gained and the limitations that still exist for her future reconsideration.
