A Report Of C-E Translation On The War Of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression In Western Yunnan(Chapter 8):From The Perspective Of Adaptation And Selection

In 1942 when China had been suffering heavy disasters from Japanese aggression for 11 years,all its international aid channels,particularly those along its costal line from the northeast to the southeast,had been cut off with the only exception of Burma Road(Kunming to Yangon).This road was the only one through which to import aid materials to support the whole country in the Chinese War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.In May of the same year,the Japanese army sent a strong brigade on an expedition from Northern Burma to Western Yunnan by crossing the China-Burma border.In May,1944,for reversing the serious situation being attacked from both front and back,the Chinese Expeditionary Force were reorganized by the Nationalist Government to respond to the critical threat of being attacked upon the vast southwestern rear in the war,the poorly guarded part of China at that time.They won the war by wiping out over 20,000 Japanese soldiers and driving the remnants out of the country.The source text of this translation is Chapter 8 of The War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression in Western Yunnan.It records in detail the bloody battles fought by the Chinese Expeditionary Force in Western Yunnan in the early 1940 s,and heralds the prelude to counterattacks against the Japanese aggression in the China Theater from the front line by driving them out of its southwestern borderline.In her translation practice,the translator analyzes and translates the original text with the guidance of the three-dimensional transformations’ strategy within the Adaptation and Selection theory.She attempts to optimize the original text to a great extent and selects the most optimal alternatives for her version in the target language.The aim of her strenuous efforts is to convey the precise original information and the historical facts to the target readers.It is her wish to translate the historical events for the readers in the English-speaking countries,and push ahead researches at home and abroad on the theme of war history,particularly that of the war of resistance against Japanese aggression in the western part of Yunnan Province.Of the five parts in the report,the first introduces the backgrounds,objectives,and significance of the translation project from a macroscopic point of view.The second part describes the analysis of the original text and the difficulties the translator encountered in her translation process.The third part displays the contents and principles of the Adaptation and Selection theory so as to build a theoretical foundation for discussions of and solutions to the problems she encountered.The fourth part,as the heart of this report,places its emphasis on a discussion of typical translation cases,and conducts inductions from the linguistic,cultural and communicative dimensions.In the conclusion part,the translator summarizes her gains,her shortcomings,and sketches a few directions for her academic development in the future.
