This translation project consists of two parts. The first part is the Chinese translation of the English source text. The translation materials selected for the project are chapters 18 to 24 from the English novel In a Dark Wood. The second part is a critical commentary, which is an analysis of the translation strategies used in the translation from the perspective of George Steiner. The critical commentary are divided into five parts: introduction, linguistic features of the source text, translation theory used as a guide to this project, case study and conclusion. The project aims to provide a historical perspective of England to Chinese readers, feeling as if they were reading the original. The novel selected for this project is a highly literary historical novel. As a historical novel, the story contains rich historical and geographical knowledge and to a certain extent, reflects the social conditions and folk customs of England in the Middle Ages. Therefore,in addition to having the pleasure of reading a novel,Chinese readers can also learn something about the English society and the life of the English people at that time.According to the type of the translation material, the translator chooses George Steiner’s fourfold translation theory of Hermeneutics as a guide in the process of translation. The theory helps the translator much in analyzing the source text and grasping the hidden meanings of the story.Even so,the translator holds that a qualified translator grows out of practice not theories.Translation theories can be good guides to translation, but practice is the only sure way to improve the professional skills of translators.
