A Research On The Style Of Zha Liangzheng’s Poetry Translation

In the traditional translation studies,translation is regarded as an imitation of the original,the translator’s absolute faithfulness to the original is emphasized,and the creativity and style of the translator is generally ignored.The study of translator’s style has aroused great concern with the increasing recognition of the translator’s subjectivity and creativity.Zha Liangzheng(1918-1977),pseudonym Mu Dan,made brilliant achievements in poetry writing and translation.As a poet,he was known as“the flagman of the modernization of new poetry”,leaving rich experience for the creation of new poetry.As a translator,his translation ideas had practical guiding significance and important academic value.Though many previous researches on Zha’s translation are indeed excellent,few of them focus on his poetry translation style.Consequently,the author takes Liu Miqing’s style translation theory as the theoretical framework and Zha’s poetry translation as research samples with the methods of literature analysis,comparative analysis and qualitative analysis,aiming to make a preliminary exploration on Zha’s poetry translation style.The thesis firstly combs the definitions of “style” and “translation style”,pointing out that translation style is determined by translator’s creative personality,artistic preference,language habits and views on translation.In addition,translation style develops in translation practice.Then,it reviews the previous studies on Zha’s poetry writing and translation.After that,it gives a detailed introduction to the theoretical basis — — Liu Miqing’s style translation theory,including formal and non-formal markers.Finally,the body part of this thesis makes a concrete analysis of the translated examples in Don Juan from the two aspects of formal and non-formal markers.The former selects three of the six categories: phonological markers,register markers and markers of figures of speech.Phonological markers mainly contain prosodic rhythm and freedom from the restriction of “Duns”;register markers mainly contain the reproduction of situation,the command of register,the addition of phrases and clarification of the original meaning;markers of figures of speech contain three rhetorical devices: metaphor,personification and allusion,aiming to strengthen theeffect of expression.The author summarizes Zha’s translation style by combining formal markers with non-formal markers which include ways of expression,the original’s inherent quality and poet’s spiritual temperament.The style of Zha’s poetry translation could be summarized as follows:(1)Zha’s style of poetry translation is natural and harmonious in terms of phonological markers.Zha advocated “translating verse as verse” with fluent translation as well as precise and creative option of words.His poetry translation contained harmonious rhyme,strong rhythm and freedom from the restriction of“Duns”.(2)Zha’s style of poetry translation is faithful and flexible in terms of register markers.Zha faithfully chose the appropriate way of expression in translation and his translation was based on the original,but very poetic and fantastic.(3)Zha’s style of poetry translation is concise and innovative in terms of markers of figures of speech.Zha made full use of Chinese words,skillfully used various sentence patterns,properly used the rhetoric devices and fully reproduced the original style.(4)Zha’s style of poetry translation is humorous and sensitive in terms of ways of expression.Zha revealed the unfairness of the society with a good sense of humor and reproduced the original style with appropriate symbolic techniques.(5)Zha’s style of poetry translation is refreshing and romantic in terms of the original’s inherent quality.Based on the full understanding of the original,Zha’s translation is refreshing and innovative,leaving readers a sense of romanticism.(6)Zha’s style of poetry translation is precise and realistic in terms of poet’s spiritual temperament.Zha concentrated on the expression of translation and precisely understood the characteristics of figures so as to make his translation vivid,realistic and easy to understand.By and large,Zha’s poetry translation tends to be excellent from the perspectives of not only the accuracy of expression but also the depth of style reproduction.
