Reading is an important means for people to obtain information and exchange ideas,an effective means to continuously enrich culture and accomplishment,as well as a social and cultural skill necessary for people’s survival and development in modern society.Reading is not only an important way for students to acquire knowledge,accumulate vocabulary and get familiar with sentence patterns,but also a basic means of language learning and language use.English Curriculum Standards state the ultimate goal of English reading teaching is to make students possess the ability of independent reading and English reading skills,achieving from search of the surface information to deep understanding of the text.In the current stage of English reading teaching,teachers attach great importance to reading teaching,overemphasize training of vocabulary and grammar which restrict students’ thinking in reading learning.This way of reading teaching may result in poor teaching effect and it is difficult for students to improve their reading ability.Guided learning plan plays an active role in guiding students to actively construct knowledge,guiding students to “learn to learn effectively”.As a visual tool,mind map can display the content of reading materials visually,help learners process and understand reading materials in a systematic way,and externalize readers’ thinking process.Based on this background,previous studies and theoretical basis: constructivism theory,Bruner’s discovery learning theory and schema theory,the author takes the current situation of English reading teaching into consideration,tries to explore a more effective and practical English reading teaching model with combination of guided learning plan and mind map.The study mainly highlights two research questions:1.What are the current situations of students’ English reading in rural junior high school?2.In what ways can guided learning plan based on mind map promote students’ reading ability?In this study,students from two parallel classes of Grade 8,Caiqi Junior High School of Gansu province are selected as the research objects,of which one class is the experimental class and the other is the control class.The control class is taught with the traditional teaching method,while the experimental class is taught with guided learning plan based on mind map.The experiment lasts for 20 weeks.In this research,the teaching model of guided learning plan based on mind map is used to test its effectiveness in English reading class through literature search,questionnaire,test and personal interview combined with teaching practice.Through analysis of results of pre-test and post-test scores,questionnaires and interview,it is shown that the use of guided learning plan based on mind map in rural junior high school can effectively improve students’ reading ability and improve the current situation of English reading teaching.In the research the author found that: Firstly,the guided learning plan based on mind map helps students master reading strategies and carry out efficient reading.Secondly,the guided learning plan based on mind map helps students get an in-depth understanding of the reading materials and improve their article retelling ability.Thirdly,the guided learning plan based on mind map can improve students’ active participation in reading,turning passive reading to active reading.Finally,the guided learning plan based on mind map helps students better master language knowledge.Based on the above research,this paper proposes the following teaching inspirations for English reading teaching in rural junior high schools.First of all,English reading teaching should focus on the cultivation of reading strategies and interests.Secondly,English reading teaching should pay attention to the connection between content and real life.Thirdly,teachers should change the teaching methods of English reading and give full play to students’ main role.Finally,the guided learning plan based on mind map can be widely applied to other types of English teaching.
