| In the context of urbanization, the city in the new century literature no longer looks like a single "city of desire",but presents a more diversified appearance. The diverse urban culture provides a rich background for the portrayal of urban youth, and writers are keen to capture the reality and explore the changes in the image of youth under the new urban change. In the novels of the new century, there are more and more "noncharacterized" images of urban youth, who are no longer portrayed to meet the expectations of the society, but to return to the reality of life and speak about the current situation of the individual youths and their spiritual plight. This dissertation takes the image of urban youth in the novels of the new century as the object of study, and breaks the classification based on generational writers by focusing on the daily life, survival status, and spirituality of urban youth, looking into the intellectual and emotional history of youth in the realistic urban context, and exploring the dilemmas faced by urban youth and how they start to reshape the ideal subject.By capturing the common problems faced by urban youth, the thesis explores how urban youth are shaped, how the uniqueness of individual youth is revealed under the commonality of the times, and how the core and essence of the changing times can be more accurately grasped through the images of youth. The thesis consists of three parts: the introduction, the body and the conclusion,of which the body consists of four chapters. The introductory part explains the reason and significance of the topic, compares the existing research on youth image, summarizes the existing research results, and presents the overall writing idea of the thesis. The first chapter starts from the daily writing of urban youth, discussing the new life situation faced by urban youth in the new century from three aspects: material pursuit, marriage choice, and interpersonal relationship, and exploring the different choices and emotional characteristics of youth in multiple relationships. We explore the complexities and contradictions of urban youths, and we can see that they have become desperate, numb, and cruel in the urban society, but we can also see the persistent questioning and deep reflection on their individual existence through the calm surface of daily life. The second chapter analyzes the survival of urban youth in the new century novels under the urban space in the context of specific works.By analyzing the influence of public space, private space and cyberspace on urban youth,it is found that the conflict between personal space and public space, and the anxiety and wandering of losing one’s home have become the norm of urban youth’s existence, and the complex existence makes the image of urban youth more three-dimensional and fuller, and shows distinctive characteristics of the times. The third chapter focuses on the spiritual characteristics of urban youth in the accelerated development of the city, when they face the problems of survival pressure and loss of ideals. The alienation of the city has intensified the spiritual "alienation" and emotional detachment of urban youth, and the divide has become deeper and deeper. In the fourth chapter, through the analysis of three types of youths: failed youths, negative youths, and ideal youths,we discuss that when failure and negativity have become the emotions of the times, the strong subjectivity and individual consciousness of ideal youths provide viable methods for countless disillusioned people to fight against the heavy reality, and inspire the powerless to find courage to live in the shadow of failure. The image of the ideal youth is undoubtedly a possibility for the youth of today to be revitalized. This thesis attempts to focus on the image of urban youth in the novels of the new century, break the classification based on the standard of writers, and analyze the urban youth with the commonality of the times under different writers since the new century, hoping to remind the youth to find their own position in the irreversible process of urbanization, properly handle the relationship between youth and the city, and realize their self-worth.It will inspire young readers and guide the formation of positive youth culture. |
