Abstract/Summary:
The emergence of the Royal warlords in the last years of the Eastern Han Dynasty is closely related to the Royal policies since the two Han Dynasties and the background of political and social chaos at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty.Generally speaking, the attitude of the Han Dynasty to the royal family was mainly to suppress and to serve and maintain the imperial power. At the beginning of the Western Han Dynasty, the royal power represented by the princes was prosperous, which led to the formation of centrifugal force. In order to contain the power of the princes, the Western Han government began to adopt the policy of cutting vassals and so on.In the Eastern Han Dynasty,Emperor Guangwu continued to restrict the power of the royal family and forbid the princes to interfere in the political affairs. The royal family was invincible to the relatives and eunuchs in the field of power competition. In this case,it continued until the outbreak of the Yellow turban uprising, the war swept across the country, and the local military and political systems were in crisis. On the one hand,in order to solve the local crisis and stabilize the order,on the other hand,in order to protect the imperial power and maintain the rule,Emperor Ling adopted the proposal of Liu Yan,a member of the royal family,to change the assassin into a state animal, and selected a number of Royal assassins and State animal. These members of the royal family obtained local administrative power through the Eastern Han Dynasty government. In order to protect themselves, they all went on the road of supporting the soldiers and respecting themselves. At the same time, the suppression of the yellow scarf uprising provided them with the opportunity to support the soldiers, and finally formed the warlord group with the Royal brand. However, due to the internal factors of each royal member’s personal ability, political and military literacy, and the complex environment of warlords in the late Eastern Han Dynasty, only a few Royal warlords survived and grew up,such as Liu Yan,Liu Biao and Liu Bei.Liu Yan took the lead in establishing a warlord separatist force in Yizhou.Liu Yan,a royal elite, once served as Nanyang Prefecture magistrate,Zongzheng and Taichang after the king of Lu Gong in the Western Han Dynasty.Liu Yan took the opportunity of going out of the state to establish the local separatist regime for the Royal warlords.Liu Yan and his son Liu Zhang have been in Yizhou for more than 35 years. The two people’s policy of protecting the territory and the people created a rich political and economic environment for Yizhou, and finally prepared for the establishment of Shu Han in the Three Kingdoms.Liu Biao, who was also the king of Lu Gong in the Western Han Dynasty, was educated by the orthodox Confucianists and learned a lot.He was named "eight Gu" in the "Qing Yi" activity. He was a famous member of the royal family and also an elite.Liu Biao established the regime of Jingzhou separatism with the Jingxiang people as the ruling class.Liu Biao’s rule in Jingzhou is characterized by his commitment to protecting the environment and keeping the people on the sidelines and establishing and developing Jingzhou school.Although Liu Biao’s internal contradictions eventually led to its demise,Liu Biao occupied Jingzhou from the early stage of the scuffle, indicating that the members of the royal family took the first place in the strategic area at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, which enabled the Royal warlords to guard the four battles and win a good opportunity for the survival and development of the Royal warlords. After Liu Bei became king Jing of Zhongshan in the Western Han Dynasty, however, his family background of Wufu was the same as that of the common people, which was the result of the common people of the royal family in the two Han Dynasties. The characteristic of Liu Bei’s establishment of warlord separatist regime is to give full play to his personal advantages, obtain political and military capital through war and other warlords, combine with Zhuge Liang to form a unique compound ruling mode, take advantage of the Jing regime under the blueprint of "leaving the school",and gradually develop into the three kingdoms’ confrontation.Royal warlords benefit more or less from their royal identity and have certain influence and appeal in politics. They obtained huge political and military capital from the Eastern Han Dynasty regime. After becoming the local military and political leaders, they generally used the local regional characteristics and unique advantages to form a separatist regime. On the basis of these commonalities, they have their own differences in the way and process of emergence, the problem of talents, the maintenance of social order and the development of social production, which ultimately lead to different historical fate of the Royal warlords.
