| This is a qualitative survey report on the career choice of the MI students from Xi’an International Studies University.Selecting 6 third-year MI students for in-depth interviews, the author intends to hear their inner voices about the career choice and the factors that affect their career choice.Compared with quantitative research, these qualitative data in this research present a more vivid picture depicting the interviewees’ thoughts when they are facing career choice.Through the three-level coding and qualitative analysis of the research data, the report draws the following conclusions:(1)Based on the degree of inclination toward interpreting, the career choice of MI students in XISU can be divided into three types: interpreting as priority type, interpreting as alternative type and interpreting off the table type;(2)The main factors affecting the career choice of MI students are profession factor, individual factor and school factor.Among the three factors, the influence of profession factor and individual factor are significant, the influence of school factor is very weak;(3)To be specific, the lack of related job opportunities, the difficulty of becoming an interpreter, the uncertain prospect of the profession and the negative self competence awareness discourage the MI students from being an interpreter. However, the individual interest, the significance of interpreting and the gains from school training are the main driving force for MI students to become an interpreter. |
