In order to meet the requirements of “reading” and “vocabulary” of Level 2objectives in English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2011Edition),solve the problems of primary school students’ difficulty in memorizing words and improve the students’ interest in learning English, teachers are needed to help students master good vocabulary memorizing methods.Phonics helps students memorize words by teaching the pronunciation rules of letters and letter combinations and establishing the correspondent relationship between sounds and forms. The study applies phonics to English vocabulary teaching in Grade Five of primary school, discusses its teaching effect and teaching strategies, and provides suggestions of vocabulary teaching for English teachers in primary schools.Relying on the constructivism learning theory, language transfer theory and Krashen’s theory of language input, the author uses the document retrieval, questionnaire, interview and experiment to study the following questions: Can phonics stimulate primary school students’ interest in learning English? Can phonics improve reading and spelling abilities of primary school students? In order to draw a conclusion, the author selects 104 students from two classes of Grade Five in M Primary School of L City,Shandong Province as the subjects of the study, including 52 students from the control class and 52 from the experimental class, and conducts a 16-week teaching experiment. Before the experiment, the author investigates the students’ attitudes towards English learning, the difficulty in memorizing words and the methods of memorizing words. The author also carries out the preparatory work for phonics teaching and compares the students’ reading and spelling scores to select parallel classes. In the implementation stage of the experiment, the teacher uses phonics to teach words in experimental class, while using traditional teaching method in control class. After the experiment, the author conducts a questionnaire survey to analyze the impact of phonics on the students’ interest of learning English in primary schools. And the author learns about students’ attitudes and feelings towards phonics through interview. At the same time, the software SPSS 25.0 is used to compare and analyze the test results of the experimental class and the control class,so as to understand the influence of phonics on reading and spelling abilities, and draw a conclusion on this basis. The findings of this study are as follows: First, phonics improves the interest of primary school students in learning English. Most students think that memorizing words is not so difficult and boring, and students’ confidence has been improved.Second, phonics can improve students’ ability in reading and spelling to some degree.Students in the experimental class master the pronunciation rules of letters and letter combinations, establish the correspondent relationship between sounds and forms and improve the reading and spelling accuracy and efficiency.
