| Action Plan for Upgrading and Development of Guangxi Beibu Gulf Economic Zone(hereinafter referred to as “the Action Plan”),issued in January 2018,is not only a document that provides overall guidance to the upgrading and development of the Economic Zone but also an important publicity material of the Economic Zone. Therefore,it is of great importance to translate the document for foreigners to know about the present situation and future development plan of the Economic Zone so as to promote the reputation and popularity of the Zone and attract more foreign investment. The Action Plan is an informative text with the focus on the authenticity of the content, the language of the target readers and the readability of the target text. However, there are a number of Chinese four-character structures and derivatives “X+hua” in the Action Plan with unique structures, rich meanings and concise language. These structures and derivatives indeed pose great challenges for the translator herself and thus need to be handled with great care in translation.Guided by the Communicative Translation Theory proposed by PeterNewmark, the Chinese four-character structures in the source text are mainly classified into three categories, namely Chinese four-character structures with Chinese characteristics, conventionalized semi-fixed Chinese four-character structures and parallel Chinese four-character structures. And then corresponding translation strategies and methods are adopted based on the principles of “faithfulness”,“readability” and “adaptation”.Chinese four-character structures with Chinese characteristics were translated by free translation and addition;conventionalized semi-fixed Chinese four-character structures by literal translation and free translation;parallel Chinese four-character structures by literal translation and omission;Chinese derivatives “X+hua” by literal translation and free translation. To sum up,the translator herself has learned a lot from this translation project. She categorized the Chinese four-character structures and derivatives“X+hua” and selected some representative cases to illustrate the different methods or strategies adopted in her translation.Though there could still be limitations in her analysis and the translation version of the source text,it is hoped that her experience could shed some lights and offer some insights for other translators in translating similar texts in the future. |
