“Going out” of Chinese literature has been a hot topic in recent years. In literary works, different rhetorical devices are usually adopted to make expressions and descriptions vivid and attractive. However,it is challenging to reproduce figures of speech because of the differences between languages and cultures. It is also definitely crucial to figure out how to deal with the rhetorical devices in prose so that Chinese prose with distinctive artistic conception and charming language can go global better and foreign readers can appreciate the beauties of sense, sound and form when reading Chinese essays. Therefore, the translation of rhetorical devices in The State of Moxibustion: Warming the Four Seasons of Life is analyzed in detail.Combining with traditional Chinese medicine, this piece of prose involves various ways of expression and a large number of rhetorical techniques including simile, metaphor, parallelism and onomatopoeia, which not only helps to attract foreign readers to further understand traditional Chinese medicine but also enables them to feel the rhetorical beauty of Chinese prose. The author is entrusted by the original author Li Qihang to translate the first chapter from Chinese into English with the total number of 17151 characters.Based on the experience of the translation project of The State of Moxibustion: Warming the Four Seasons of Life, this translation report is composed of four chapters. In this translation practice, typical examples in the original text are analyzed to discuss how to reproduce rhetorical effects of modern Chinese prose at lexical, syntactical and phonetic levels under the guidance of relevance theory, involving such translation approaches as literal translation, free translation, substitution, conversion, omission and compensation.Based on the case study, the following conclusions are reached.Literal translation should be considered first to maintain the image and style of the source-text language.Due to the linguistic and cultural differences between Chinese and English, however, other translation approaches such as substitution, conversion and compensation can be considered to achieve the rhetorical effect when literal translation is not practicable.Omission can be even taken into consideration to delete the expressions that do not conform to the logic of the target language under the condition of ensuring the authenticity of the original text. The author hopes that this translation report can provide a reference for the further study of prose translation and rhetorical reproduction.Besides, the author’s ability in prose and TCM translation can be improved.
