| Nancy Drew is a juvenile detective series published in the USA but popular all around the world.Nancy Drew,the heroine,uncovers and solves one after another mysterious cases.With its intertwined plots and rigorous logic,the novel not only appeals to the teenagers’ tastes,but also has the potential to develop their critical thinking skills and positive values.However,so far,few of the Series have been published officially in the Chinese book market and do not seem to attract much attention of the target readers.In the process of translation,the author finds that rhetorical devices are abundant in the source text.How to represent the tension of the original plots by translating these devices faithfully,expressively and elegantly is a key problem to be solved.This issue thus becomes the focus of the report.The report,based on the differences between English and Chinese cultural images and customs,has adopted the Relevance Theory to analyze the semantic connotation of rhetorical devices in the two volumes to achieve the optimal relevance.Specially,Sun Yuanxu,who has classified translation strategies into literal and free translation,affords the author lessons on theirs translation to seek for the optimal equivalence.While trying to faithfully represent the tension of the source text and ensure translation quality,the author has extracted translation strategies for English rhetorical devices:(1)The interior conversion of the same rhetorical device.(2)The conversion of different rhetorical devices.(3)Convey the connotation of the original rhetorical device.The report consists of five parts: the first part introduces the content,background and significance of the task as well as the framework of the report.The second part provides a review of the translation process,describing what the author has done in the pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation stages.The third part reviews the relevant studies of the Relevance Theory conducted at home and aboard particularly when used for the E-C translation of rhetorical devices.The fourth part presents case analysis on how to represent semantic connotation of English rhetorical devices in Chinese as guided by the Relevance Theory.The fifth part is to exact E-C translation strategies of rhetorical devices while outlining limitations and gains in this practice. |
