| This article study the sound in Béla Tarr’s film,four films are selected as the research objects,these films are Damnation,Satantango,Werckmeister Harmoniak,The Turin Horse.In his film,Béla Tarr has reformed the sound,two of which are very prominent.First,in the scene of smashing the hospital in Werckmeister Harmoniak,Béla Tarr deleted the voice of the mob and the wail of patient,highlighted the tragic situation of patient,showing the cruelty of the mob in a more powerful and artistic way;second,Béla Tarr used source music to restore reality life and reduce contrived emotion expression in Damnation.In order to reveal the living state of characters,Béla Tarr designed the sound of cable to express the mechanical and dull life of Karrer,and the sound of shaking door to metaphor his inner world in Damnation;The sound of wind in Satantango exuded an atmosphere of depression and despair,and also symbolizes Estike’s despair future and the end of suicide;The wind trapped the groom and his daughter at home,and the living conditions became extremely difficult in The Turin Horse.In Béla Tarr’s film,sound often symbolizes the failure of God.In Damnation,he repeatedly used a kind of roar to represent God’s indifferent attention to Karrer and his living condition;In Satantango,the church bell is God’s salvation for villager’s sin,while the church roar is God’s execution instruction after his redemption became useless;In The Turin Horse,as the incarnation of evil God,wind sound besieged the groom and his daughter,but they didn’t surrender to the wind sound and tried their best to survive,highlighting the power of human beings.Béla Tarr’s sound design showed four author characteristics:Sound dispel vapidity of long shot,Unreal underscore sound express meaning,Exaggerated sound express emotions,Combination design of sound counterpoint and long shot.Starting from Damnation,Béla Tarr expressed his doubt about God and began to believe human.In Satantango and Werckmeister Harmoniak,his doubt turned into distrust.Eventually,Béla Tarr’s attitude towards God was completely transformed into disappointment and abandonment in his last film The Turin Horse,he expounded the fact that God doesn’t exist,and raising human dignity to unprecedented height. |
